Base Defense Mini-Mission

Operation Bottled Fury

Briefing:

EXALT has begun their assault on our HQ. Reports are still coming in, but the information we do have suggests that they will be attacking us on two fronts. While the teams set up for the main defense, the refugees, civilian staff, and security need to be moved to the holo-training room, where they will be completely safe, being at the lowest level of the base, and under the protection of half of the Legion forces, Saka's soldiers, and the holographic systems.

A few civilians were sighted entering the psi-labs, but they did not come back out. A head count has turned up a number of key people missing. Quickly check there and evacuate anyone you find before the automated systems go into lock-down.

"Soldiers" for this mission:

GSGT Kasagi, Ayame (Gunner) [Hyper Reactive Pupils, Bioelectric Skin, Muscle Fiber Density, Aerobic Respiration Boost, Neural Dampening]
A-SGT Lockheart, Jessica (Head of Genetics) [Eidetic Memory, Genius IQ, Pregnency]
A-SGT Weiworia, Jake (Head of Refugee Security) [Empathic Senses, Part-time Therapist]
A-CPL Francois, Jean (Head of Psi Lab Engineering)
A-CPL Francois, Jeanne (Head of Psi Lab Sciences)
Jan’tialamacaria (Ethereal) (Black Psion)

Enemies: Unknown

Condition for Completion:
The survival of the entire team, keeping them safe from the enemy's hand, and you own.

Operation Bottled Fury: Part One

Quite Fascinating.
Death ran her hand across the surface of the psionic pod. And the occupants feel... no discomfort?

"Other the some nausea, no." Jeanne watched the young Ethereal carefully, though tried not to make it too obvious. "It takes longer, but it unlocks the powers all the same without the pain Buniq or the other refugees mentioned. I'm surprised the Ethereals never thought of it."

Death shook her head slightly. They likely did, but did not feel it was... cost effective. As I have said before, the Ethereals are not as patient about their Path as they claim.

"Hmm..." Jeanne smiled at Jake, Death's escort. "You ever think of jumping in? You obviously have potential."

Jake laughed nervously. "Nah, that's okay. I'm satisfied with what I have. Atka is teaching me a bit of ESP, but beyond that, I'm happy as I am."

That is probably for the best.
Death glanced at him. It shows a restraint amongst your people that is obviously lacking in mine. Between you and Atka, you have impressed me.

"Oh, a human impressing an Ethereal." Jean nudged Jake as he passed him. "It's a start, even if she is more accommodating then your average Ethereal." Approaching Death, he held out what looked like a techno-party bracelet. "Ta-da! One psionic suppression device, just for you, my dear."

Death took it, and looked it up and down. Impressive that you should complete it so quickly.

Jean waved a dismissive hand. "Nah, this has been in the works since Walker was jailed. Just had to calibrate it to the right frequency, easy when you have every color, and the right power level. At this setting, how low will it take you?"

Twenty-five percent. This will block my higher tier abilities, and make my weaker abilities on par with most of the soldiers on base, and weaker then Atka and Desmond Walker, as well as your Central Officer once her powers return.

"Well, it won't block them completely, though the use of energy beyond a certain point will trigger... uh..." Jean bit his lip. "...a rather nasty shock."

"You know, I don't think the Commander would force you to do this... unless you did something wrong," Jake stated. "And... I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but this isn't going to convince everyone. In fact, there are a lot of people who will believe this is just a ploy."

That does not matter, the Ethereal responded. All that matters is those I can convince, however few. It would be nice, for once, to not be judged for my unfortunate relation to a particular race, something I had no control over. She placed the device against her wrist. Before she could secure it, a shockwave violently shook the room. The bracelet fell from her hands, sliding under the pod.

As the group desperately tried to keep their balance against the continuous rumbling, Jessica burst into the room. "Guys, the base is under..." She screeched loudly at the sight of the alien. Holding her chest and swallowing hard, she muttered, "I-I'm sorry, I... um... the base is under attack. We need to get evacuate to the holo-training room."

Everyone nodded, walking towards her, save for Jeanne. The scientist rushed over to her computer, typing rapidly. "What are you doing?" her brother insisted. "We need to get out of here!"

"I'll only be a few minutes. Go on without me." Jeanne continued to type, her expression saying she wouldn't be moved.

Jean waved for the others to leave, but they all exchanged a look, and decided to wait with her. Ten minutes later, Ayame peaked her head in the door. "Hey, someone told me they saw... what the hell are you all doing?!" She rushed inside, stopping a moment to glare to the short, cloaked figure. "We... we need to go! Everyone else has been secured!"

Jeanne waved a dismissive hand. "I need to make sure the lab's data is secure, as well as lock down access to the psionic shield generator. What is the hurry? It would take longer then this for them to get into the base."

"That isn't the problem, you idiot!" Ayame practically growled. "Any minute now, the automatic defenses are going to..." She was cut of by the sound of a large, metal doors slamming down outside. She stepped out of the room to confirm what she already knew; she was trapped here.

As she stepped back into the room, muttering angrily under her breath, Jeanne gave her a cautious smile. "I... I-I'm sorry, I... a-are you... mad?"

"Mad?" Ayame smiled, and slowly walked over to her. "Why would I be mad? Base is being bombed, enemies are blowing their way inside, and Mary and Atka, the two most important people in my life, are probably out there fighting, while I... am stuck here.... with a pair of French nerds, a man that thinks he's good enough for Atka, a pregnant woman, and... and..." She pointed an angry finger at Death. "...that!" Reaching down, she lifted Jeanne from her seat by her collar and held her close. "All because someone with their priorities on backwards ignored the alarms and sounds of explosions! SO WHY THE FUCK WOULD I BE MAD?!"

Jake placed his hand on Ayame's shoulder. "Come now. What's done is done. No need to AHK!"

Ayame wrapped her hand around Jake's throat. "Don't... test me... boy..." She released them both, and walked away, still mumbling.

Noting the Ethereal watching the display, Jake laughed nervously as he rubbed his throat. "She's... she's a swell cough person, once you get to know her... right?"

"Right." Jessica walked over to the brooding soldier. "I'll have a talk with her."

Operation Bottled Fury: Part Two

=========================

Ayame watched as Death starred intently at the object floating before her. "What's that? Some kind of trinket I'm sure you won't use to screw us over?"

No. It is a device made by the twins to suppress my powers.

"Oh good," Ayame chuckled. "Commander finally got the sense to put one of you on a leash. One down, three to..."

"Ayame!" Jessica snapped. "The Commander had nothing to do with this. It is to help her earn the trust of certain stubborn people that insist on judging a book by its cover."

Ayame rolled her eyes. "Just a ploy to make us let our guard down. It was probably thinking of this before..."

An aura of energy flared from Death at the sound of being called 'it' again, by she quickly calmed down. This was not my idea, even if I wish it was. It was the idea of a woman named Mary, possibly the same one you spoke of. She proposed the idea, and I excepted it.

"Mary's idea?" Ayame remember the discussion they had when she left the infirmary. "Oh, yeah, she... she did mention... I guess... I should apolo..."

Do not bother. Death snatched the bracelet out of the air. As I have said many time before, I am used to it. I shall forever be judged, not by my own accomplishments, but by the family I was born into. You have no idea what it is like to be judged for things completely out of your control, so spare me your forced sentiment.

Ayame bit her lip, surprised by her own feelings of guilt. "I... I have some idea..." She clenched her teeth, and jumped to her feet, pointing an accusing finger at the Ethereal. "But a lot of it is your fault for letting it happen, you know!?"

What?

"What's with this 'used to it', 'come to expect it', 'forever part of my life' bullshit? Are you like the other Ethereals? No? Then don't try to make people see that. Force them to! Jam it down their throats! Don't just sit there and take it when a bitch like me comes along and unfairly judged you!"

"She right," Jessica joined in, standing at Ayame's side. "You talk about how you aren't like them, but it almost sounds like you believe you deserved to be judged! No one deserves to be judged! So the next time someone starts insulting you, don't just take it! Tell them you are fighting them, killing them. That you have risen beyond such an evil people. That you cast them off, and you don't deserve to but treated like them! Especially when you are willing to weaken your powers just to prove yourself!"

"And if that person doesn't believe you," Jake added, "then leave them. Ignore them. They aren't worth your time. Focus on those who are willing to listen, who are smart enough to listen, and don't pay anyone else any mind!"

Death starred at them for several moments. Finally, after what seemed like forever, she nodded. "Th... thank you," a shaky voice said under the hood, and she carefully slipped the bracelet on.

=========================

"So... you're the guy that Atka decided to give the time of day to, huh?" Ayame asked, sitting across from Jake.

The guard laughed nervously. "Yeah, well, it isn't saying much." When this elicited a glare, he quickly added, "A-about me! It... isn't saying much about me. She... she could have any guy on base. I... probably just got lucky."

"Hmph..." Ayame folded her arms. "Atka's judgement is better then that, little man. If you won her over, I think that is saying something."

Jessica leaned close to Jake, whispering, "I think that was a compliment."

Jake nodded. "So, uh... she talks about you a lot. You two seem pretty close. Like... like really close..."

Ayame raised an eyebrow. "If you are getting at what I think you're getting at, Atka is open minded, but not that open minded."

"Oh, I... ahem, knew that, I..." Jake scratched the back of his neck. "Did you ever... try..."

Ayame leaned forward, giving him a death stare. "You some kinda pervert, boy?"

"Actually, I wanted to know the same thing," Jessica said.

Ayame waved a dismissive hand. "Well, I know you're a pervert." This reddened Jessica's cheeks. "And no, I never tried anything. I knew Atka wasn't into it, so why would I ever try? Not to say the temptation wasn't there. She has the looks to match her smarts, after all." The look on Jake's face made Ayame smile. "Well, it isn't like I peaked. But, when two woman bunk together, take a shower or two together... you... you haven't got that far with Atka, have you?"

Jake slowly shook his head. "I... I don't want our relationship to be about that, and I'd rather it be up to Atka if... and when... we..."

"Oh, so sweet." Jessica nudged the guard. "How can you be so hard on a man that is so concerned with Atka's feelings, Ayame?"

Ayame shrugged. "I guess you have a point. So here's the deal. You make Atka happy, and I've got your back. I'll even protect you if need be. But... if you ever hurt her, I swear, you will curse the day you were born..."

Jake nodded. "Deal."

=========================

"You... what!" All heads turned to the shouting French man. "I can not believe you would... you have ruined the sanctuary of your..."

"It isn't the first time, Jean," his sister answered. "I'm sorry if I've shattered this perfect image in your head of a innocent, pure sister, but I am an adult, and I have the same urges and desires..."

"Oh, Lord, I don't want to her about..." Jean paced back and forth. "Who is he? I want to know his name!"

"Why, so you can find him, get all huffy about touching your sister, and scare off yet another man who..."

"I... I never..."

"You ALWAYS!" Jeanne screamed. "I'm not single because I choose to be. I'm single because my father and brother always assume no one is good enough for me, and always chase them off! Well, don't worry about this one. It wasn't even serious. We just both wanted to..."

"To what, sleep around!?" Jean looked at her with disgust. "To think, my own sister would turn into a cheep..."

The sound of Jeanne's hand slapping her brother's face resounded through the room like a thunderclap. Holding her now throbbing hand, and few tears forming in her eyes, Jeanne muttered, "Comment osez-vous? I am not... sleeping around. It was one man. ONE man! Just as you gladly and so freely jump into one woman's bed, assuming you have been able to keep your lecherous ways in check. That... that you, my own brother... would... w-would talk d-down to me like I was some... whore, I..."

Jean rubbed his glowing red cheek. "Jeanne, I... I didn't mean... I'm s..."

An explosion resounded nearby, and the sound of one of the steel blockades crashing to the ground followed. "Some of them must have gotten past the defenses!" Ayame yelled. She looked around the room, and saw little in the way of hiding spots. "Damn it, I can't fight while trying to keep so many non-combatants... you, Eth... um, Death. You can still make illusions, right? Can you make things invisible?"

I can. But I can also fight.

Ayame shook her head. "Leave it to me. I need you to protect them, and that means keeping them hidden." Death nodded, and motioned for everyone to gather at the end of the room. Once they were there, Death held up her hands, and the group disappeared from sight.

Operation Bottled Fury: Part Three

Ayame quickly grabbed her pulse rifle and switched on her shadow armor, just as half a dozen people, all with uniforms with the EXALT insignia on them, walked into the room. She could see that two of them were the usual clones, but the other four were different. Mercenaries? PMC soldiers, perhaps?

Ayame crept behind one of the pods as EXALTs slowly looked around, curious about the Psi lab. She carefully pulled a knife from her belt. I'll have to do this quickly but carefully. I'm severely outnumbered, but have them by complete surprise. Ayame's eyes darted across the room, taking note of what everyone was doing, where they were, how close they were to each other, and any opportunity to... There! She quickly but silently sunk behind one of the clones. A hand over the mouth and a quick jab between the rips, and he was done. She shoved him into the partially open pod, and slunk back into the shadows.

Another opportunity quickly opened up. She approached a female PMC, steadied her knife, reached out, and stopped dead in her tracks as the woman turned around, pointing a gun directly at her face. "Damn, these gene-mods are useful," she said in a thick British accent. "Drop the cloak, or I fire." Ayame did as she was told, deactivating the shadow armor and carefully placing her rifle and knife on the ground before standing up. "That armor of yours is pretty good too, love. Perhaps I could..." the woman studied Ayame's face. "Eris? Is that you? I thought you died with the rest of the gang in the states!"

Ayame grinned. "Hey, Demeter. Small world, huh? I don't suppose you'd let me off the hook for old times sake?"

Demeter's eyes darted towards the X-COM insignia on Ayame's uniform, and shrugged. "Sorry, love. Professionalism and all that. Besides..." She jabbed Ayame hard in the gut, bringing the Asian woman to her knees. "I still owed you that one for my daughter."

Ayame wheezed loudly, barely choking out, "Your... daughter... came to me... couldn't... deny her... a good time..."

Demeter smirked. "Always the defiant one." She turned to face the rest of the room. Taking a moment to notice she was missing a clone, she glanced at the other one, who looked at a small device and nodded at her. "Alright, we know someone else is hiding in here. Someone with a large psionic energy signal. Come out, and you'll be taken captive. Stay hidden, and we kill her, then shoot up the room."

After several seconds of silence, Demeter scoffed and pulled out her sidearm. As she raised it to Ayame's head, Death dropped the illusion. The rest of the group cautiously stepped forward, there hands raised. The EXALT's kept most of their focus on the cloaked figure. Ayame, Death said privately. When the opportunity arises, I should be able to disable everyone. I just need to wait until enough of them...

Death was silenced by a violent whack to the head by Demeter's rifle, flooring her. The mercenary woman yanked off Death's hood and laughed. "You selling yourself to the aliens now, Eris? You're even easier then I thought."

Ayame shook her head. "Not as easy as you are, or so I've heard from a number of men around the various bases I've been to."

Demeter quickly turned her pistol towards Ayame, putting a bullet through both of her legs. "Never could learn to shut the fuck up, could you, love?" She said loudly, both from anger, and to be heard over Ayame's cries of pain.

"Enough, please," Jean insisted. "You said you'd take us alive. We're defenseless now."

"True," Demeter answered. "And I am usually a woman of my word. But there are six of you, and only five of us. There were six, but I'm guessing Eris killed one of ours and stuffed him somewhere. I'd kill her for it, but if I did that, she'd never learn. So..."

Demeter lifted her Gauss rifle, firing at Jean. He was knocked to the ground, not by the round, but by Jeanne shoving him out of the way. He looked in horror at his sister, lying on the ground with a rapidly growing pool of blood around her. "No!" He rushed to her side, lifting her head into his lap and futilely trying to stop the bleeding from the massive hole in her gut. "Jeanne, no, please! You can't!"

"I... I-I'm sorry, I... I... slapped..."

"No, please, you can't do this!" Jean insisted. "I can't do this without you, I... I'm sorry I... I love you, Jeanne please, I..."

"I... I love..." Jeanne's eye fluttered close, her body going limp. Death starred in horror at the scene before her.

=========================

"Mother! Mother, no, please!" The small Ethereal pumped all the energy she had into her biokinesis, trying to stop the bleeding, but she wasn't strong enough. The older Ethereal gently ran her hand across the child's face before it fell to the ground. The child still tried to save her, still infused her energy into the older Ethereal, despite it being over.

Stop this idiocy, Jan’tiala. She is dead. Now, get back to your room!

"Mother, please! Please, don't leave me like this! PLEASE!"

ENOUGH! The other Ethereal in the room extended his hand, renching the child away from the corpse. She wasn't even your mother. She simply provided the DNA to create you! She experimented on you, just like everyone else, until now, when she turned her back on the Path!

"By trying to save me!" The young Ehtereal screamed. "By trying to get me away from you! She was infinitely more of a parent then you could ever be, father!" She spoke the last words like they were a curse.

Enough of this foolishness. Take her back to her room, and this time, kill anyone who tries to visit her without clear authorization.

As the imposing Ethereal's personal guard dragged her away, the child extended her four arms towards the dead Ethereal. "Mother, no! Please! MOTHER!!!"

=========================

Death's eyes glowed with a raging fury. As her power rose, the bracelet sent torrents of electricity through her body, but she ignored it. Recognizing the danger, Demeter sceamed, "KILL THEM!" The EXALT troops opened fire. Time seemed to slow down as Death raised her arms, four sheilds appearing before the twins, Jake, Jessica, and herself. Demeter screamed in fury as she rushed the Ethereal, a large combat knife in hand. She plunged it forward, and Death raised her arm, allowing it to stab through her wrist, as well as the bracelet. Her energy freed, she swiped her hand to the side, the EXALT's weapons flying out of their hands. As they reached for their sidearms, Death shoved Demeter back, the woman landing next to a very angry Asian woman that proceeded to wail on her. Death extended her hands again, and the four other enemies dropped, one's heart being crushed, one's brain shutting their body down, one's ignited in flames, and the final one shooting himself in the head.

Death rushed to Jeanne's side, and placed two hands on the bullet wound, one over her heart, and one on her forehead. The Ethereal's hands glowed a bright green as she desperately worked to bring the woman back from Death's door. When it didn't seem to work, she pumped more and more energy into it, her skin rapidly fading from a light black to a sickly grey.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity but was likely less then a minute, Death collapsed to the ground, barely breathing. Jessica and Jake rushed to her aid as Jeanne's eyes slowly opened, and Jean burst into tears, wrapping his hands around her and sobbing loudly. M ... Mémé dit salut," the French woman whispered.

Ayame delivered one final hook that knocked Demeter out. She let out a sigh of relief, looking over the carnage. Unable to move on her own, she simply laid back, and waited for the eventual help to arrive, Jean staying by his sister, Jake patching up Ayame's legs as best he could and watching Demeter, and Jessica watching over the young Ethereal.

Operation Defusing Despots
Covert Operation

Start Time: October 11th, 2018; 1145 Hours

Briefing:
X-COM has recently acquired the identity of the organization that attacked our base, an international private military company known as Black Void Contracting. Although a grudge with a decimated group of mercenaries seems beneath XCOM, insider information points to a figure in the group taking charge with the intent of striking our convoys and craft before scheduling an assault on our base again. Even if Black Void does not pose a threat equal to the aliens, if we can prevent further disruptions to our operations, it is worth a small deployment.

In addition, an investigation of the EXALT headquarters prior to their defeat found the place stripped bare, and we have reason to believe Black Void is responsible. While we are sure the majority of their technology was used in the attack, Black Void no doubt found something that can be used against us, whether it be actually tech, or the means to make it.

The new leader appears to be a woman by the name of “Mira,” who was personally close to the now-deceased Logan Wade. Mira was given our base’s location in Siberia by Wade, and is recruiting for an attack to avenge Wade and steal advanced weapons. Although Mira rules with a 50-50 mix of nepotism and brute force, she is accepting almost all applicants for the sake of rebuilding her army. A covert operative capable of fast-talking will be able to infiltrate the company, sow dissent amongst the newer recruits, destroy the intelligence on X-COM’s location and any information stolen from EXALT, and possibly capture or neutralize Mira.

Operative: MSGT Amelia Fischer (Support)

Success Conditions:
Destruction of Black Void's information stores and technology salvage from EXALT

- and/or -

Capture or elimination of Black Void leader, Mira Wade

Special Enemy Notes:
Mira Wade
Age:
21
Sex: Female
Height: 161cm (5'2")
Weight: 57kg (126lb)
Origin: Moyamba, Sierra Leone
Location: London, England
Occupation: CEO of British Crown Contracting / CO of Black Void

Biographical Intel: A child orphaned by the work of Wade’s PMC, Logan adopted Mira for reasons unknown, giving her a new name and shelter in his camp. For six years, Logan has trained and indoctrinated the young girl, using her as a personal assistant and protégé. After Logan was contracted by Viktor to attack X-COM headquarters, he left the 21-year-old in his base as a contingency plan to ensure that the Black Void PMC would continue to operate as he intended if he was killed. Since Wade was killed, she has sworn vengeance upon X-COM, and is completely ignoring alien threats.

Target Analysis: Mira has excellent proficiencies in most modern Western sniper and assault rifles, as well as knowledge of basic gene mods and MEC suit piloting. She has almost no social skills or empathy (outside of her relationship with Wade), and leads her troops through force and suppression. It is unlikely she can be dissuaded from violence unless she is somehow subdued and disarmed.

Appearance: Mira has very dark skin, jet black hair, and prominent green eyes. Her physique is slender, with a deceptively strong underlying muscle mass. She always wears a well-groomed gray pantsuit and a pair of gold-rimmed aviators in public, her only other style of dress being a minimalistic workout uniform that doubles as her under-armor combat clothing.

After a long drive in the back of an APC on loan by the Council, the vehicle finally started to slow somewhere in the middle of Britain. It came to a halt with a squeal and a hiss, the hatch opening up to allow her to jump out. She wandered out into a dimly-lit walkway in the middle of a park and watched as the tank disappeared quickly into the London streets. She looked over at a large lion statue next to her, leaning against it with a sigh.

About 15 minutes later, she raised a hand to her eyes to block the headlights of a green sedan rolling up to her, trying to stay perfectly within the confines of the walkway. There were likely some city ordinances that were being broken during this whole meeting, but it certainly didn’t seem like anyone nearby was concerned with enforcing them. A woman emerged from inside as Emily approached, the woman looking completely mundane other than the XCOM-branded hat slung on her head, her hands clutching a bundle of paperwork.

“M-Sgt. Fischer,” she said rigidly, standing at attention.

“Hey, how’s it going,” Emily replied casually.

“F-fine, ma’am. I’m Intelligence Officer Brittany Watts, at your service.”

“At ease, Brittany. Not really one for formalities.”

“Of course, ma’am,” she nodded, looking through her papers. “I’ve backstopped a profile for you to use with Black Void, nothing too flashy. Mira is recruiting almost anyone with a gun and an attitude to go after the Siberia base.”

“Any changes I should know?”

“Your birth name will be Emily Williams, you’re from Rhode Island now instead of Germany or New Hampshire. It’s New England either way, and most of BV isn’t American, so it won’t be a problem. You have a stint working for North Korea that aligns with your actual deployment, and a couple slips that say you were working with a militia in Eastern Europe until now. All-in-all, you look qualified and eager, but not too much of either.”

“Hm, I was hoping for a cool fake name, like…Sasha Falcon,” she replied, looking over her counterfeit résumé. “But this works too. It’s like an evil version of me.”

“Well, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for you, ma’am.”

“What’s my equipment?”

Brittany walked over to the back of her car, clicking a button on her keychain and popping the trunk open. Inside laid a ratty blanket with XCOM’s advanced gear swaddled tightly, the intel officer’s hands working to free and hand them to her. The first was a black pistol with multiple barrels, glowing a passive red by the firing chamber.

“H.S.C., modified and scratched up so it looks like you stole it from an EXALT Elite. Even though the H.S.P.B. is a step up, its proprietary to us, and it could blow your cover when they inspect you.”

“That’s fine, but I can’t get a standard pistol? I prefer to control my fire.”

“Oh, sorry ma’am,” she dipped her cap nervously. “This mission could involve smashing sensitive equipment, and you’ll need the destructive power.”

“I understand, I'll make do. What else?”

Brittany gave a small tired sigh as she bent back into the trunk and began picking up bits of machinery and plastic, tossing them into Emily’s hands as she listed each one.

“Micro-receiver, stealth generator, USB to upload a backdoor if you need to hack – don’t lose it – lockpicks, combat knife, Swiss Army knife, three sound lures, 6 AA batteries, wire camera, corner mirrors, and a jailbroken iPhone 9: preloaded with BVC backgrounds and a uplink for Alice.”

Emily looked down at the bundle of gear cradled in her arms as Brittany put the folder of paperwork she’d need to get in on top of it all. She placed the massive bundle onto the hood of her car and began inspecting each one.

“You’re giving me a smartphone that links to Alice and it’s not an Android?”

“You know requisitions, all about missed opportunities,” she smirked. “Then your clothes...three sets of tees, dark jeans, and matching belts, one long leather jacket and a set of combat boots.”

“Mind looking away?” She took the first set over to a dark patch of the park, a broken lamppost providing some semblance of privacy.

“Oh, right,” the intel officer covered her eyes.

As she got on the new set of clothes, she walked back over and began clipping and tucking the rest of her gear away. Most of it was so small it fit in her pants, but what didn’t was able to be hidden in her jacket pockets. She did a quick twirl to make sure everything was stowed properly and gave a smile.

“I think we’re good,” Emily said.

“Great,” Brittany nodded. “Your recruiter is a man named Nate Barber, meeting you outside the pub on St. Marychurch & Rotherhithe in three hours. Guy barely talks at all, you just go up to him and say ‘I want to shoot bad guys’ and he’ll take you to the building. After that, you’ll get assigned to a room, and then you try to blend in until you can find the server rooms or Mira. Getting to Mira is harder, but destroying their infrastructure will take longer. How you want to approach it is up to you. Once you think you’re made or you’ve succeeded, use the phone or the receiver to contact Alice and the Commander will send an extraction team.”

“Sounds good to me.”

“I’ll take you near the spot in London, but you'll have to do some walking. We don’t know what kind of eyes they have.”

“Alright. One more thing, Morrigan said there will be other people loyal to us, so how should I make contact with them?”

“Oh…about that…”

“What?” Emily looked concerned.

“Well, our outpost sent in someone, Gary, to see if we could take them out without having to bother HQ, but…”

Emily stayed quiet, looking at the intel officer with apprehension.

“He…died,” she hung her head. “Someone stabbed him in the heart with a serrated knife. He didn’t even send a mayday, I didn’t even know until this morning when the police…found him.”

“Jesus…”

“I’m sorry, I should’ve been more upfront, I just…I feel guilty for what happened…”

“It’s fine, I’ll get these bastards. Just hold it together, okay?”

“Y-yes, ma’am, of course. I’m ready to take you there when you are.”

“Let’s get rolling then, Miss Watts.”

“Yes, ma’am,” she bowed nervously and then scrambled into the car.

After an hour and a half of driving through the streets of London, the nervous intelligence officer dropped Emily off in Greater London, leaving her to walk or bus the rest of the distance with a wish of luck. She found the Thames and followed it until seeing the place of her meeting, a pub called The Mayflower. After checking her pockets, she wrapped around to the entrance and entered, looking for her appointment.

Given the looming fighting, threatened power sources, and dark night air, the pub looked like a beacon of warmth with clumped up tables of beer-clutching men and women eagerly forgetting about the troubles of the world. Amber light dripped from old-fashioned lanterns, painting the white walls and russet woods in the room. In the corner, a man with a scarred up face and hand sat quietly in the corner, a barely-perceivable flash of recognition playing across his brow as he laid eyes on her. She slipped her hands into the pockets of her heavy jacket and nodded towards him as she stood by his table.

“Barber?”

“Williams?”

“That’s me,” Emily crooned. “Heard you’re the man to talk to for work.”

“Could be. Got your file?”

Emily pulled her folder slowly out from underneath her jacket, sliding it across the table as she dropped into the seat. Barber licked his thumb momentarily and whipped open the folder, quickly scanning over the papers halfheartedly.

“North Korea, eh. Losing conflict if there ever was one. Speaks to your loyalty.”

“As long as there’s pay, I stick like glue.”

“That’s good,” he sighed. “You’re in. I’ll take you to the ‘racks.”

“Easy interview.”

“Didn’t sign up for paperwork,” he shook his head. “If you’re stupid or lying, it’ll take care of itself. So don’t be either of those.”

“Didn’t fly here to be stupid,” she replied.

Barber set down his beer and stood up. “Let’s go.”

The two left the pub and loaded into Barber’s car, a fully back SUV that looked like it came straight out of an action movie villain’s garage. It was a brief ride to a twenty story building subtly marked ‘British Crown Contracting,’ blending in perfectly with the other commercial buildings around it. They walked into the foyer of the building, a wide and empty room only manned by an extremely bored looking secretary behind a desk.

“Don’t worry about this. The real stuff’s downstairs.”

Barber walked towards wall opposite the door, a small card reader next to an outline on the wall. With a swipe of his ID, the wall opened up, revealing a dark corridor with a maintenance lift. The door closed behind her as they walked in, and the small lift doors opened with a metallic screech. As the recruiter pressed the button, a scratchy and pre-recorded message from Mira blared into her ears.

”Welcome to Black Void Contracting. Please maintain a professional disposition while on our premises.”

The recruiter led her underground into a bunker-like structure, just as XCOM's base would probably look, had she actually seen it when she was being led in. As they reached the first layer of rooms, the difference was apparent immediately. There was no situation room, no mission control, this was simply a place to store people until they were needed. In true PMC fashion, they clearly liked their people battle-hungry and compartmentalized. Emily wondered what the headquarters looked like upstairs as she moved through the hallways, a set of canned monotone orders blaring over some speakers in the corner of each room.

”This is a reminder that there is no fraternization within Black Void or our clients. Any reported sexual impropriety will be met with a punitive action and a possible termination of your contract.”

“So, ‘contract termination,’” Emily said.

“You've been in the business, I'm sure you understand what it means,” Barber grumbled.

”Any Black Void soldiers who try to take weapons beyond checkpoints will be met with a contract termination.”

“You'll be placed in Delta housing for recent recruits. There's four soldiers a room, eight rooms a floor. You can talk with your bunkmates if you want, just remember the orders.”

“I'll keep to myself,” Emily grunted.

“No soldiers are to consume any substance legal or otherwise that is not appropriated to you by BV or EXALT personnel. Failure to comply will result in a court-martial.”

“Here it is,” the recruiter said, pointing at a door cut into the wall.

“Thanks. Look forward to getting some killing done.”

The recruiter walked off and she opened the door slowly, peeking in at her roommates bustling around the room. One of the men had a perfect, strong jaw with a well-trimmed goatee. His skin was yellowish and odd, freckles rising from the back of his neck. The other girl had a very youthful and Slavic appearance and flaxen hair, black prison tattoos running along her upper arm. She looked over to Emily with eyes as black as oil, broken by white pupils.

She entered the room to see the last man, who had a fancy, ornate hat that assuredly wasn't part of the EXALT common uniform. As he noticed her staring, he tipped it and flashed a confident smile towards her. The capped man didn’t have any mods like the other two.

“Bobby Ackerman, at your service,” he said.

“Ah, ignore this skulk,” the other man said with a mild Australian accent.

He swaggered over to her and put his arm around her, causing her to squirm a little uncomfortably at the sudden intimacy. She sat on one of the empty beds, looking at the others as Johnny sat beside her and leaned into her.

“If you're looking for someone to take care of you, you'll find no one better than me,” he said smoothly, bringing her hand to his lips. “Jonathan Lewis, but you can call me Johnny.”

“Jesus fucking Christ,” the woman interjected with a strong accent. “The only way you two idiots are getting any woman wet is with your own drool.”

Johnny leaped from his lean on Emily, grabbing a pen from the end table.

“You ever get tired of being so goddamn frigid, Mariya?” he shouted at her, throwing the pen.

“No,” she said loudly, giving a sour face back at him.

“Heh, it's uh...flattering,” Emily said amiably.

“Trust me, you're not special to them. It took them weeks to get sex off their minds the first time they saw me. There's a serious shortage of women here, and the ban just makes them even more annoying.” Mariya looked towards the others and raised their voice. “Not that they'd be any less deprived in a sea of pikhva!

“No one knows what the fuck that means,” Johnny snapped back.

“Then listen to the other words and maybe your primate brain can figure it out.”

“Ignore her, you don't want to be a bitch like her,” Johnny said, placing his hand on her thigh, causing her to flinch before turning stoic again.

“Maybe not,” Emily said, flashing a flirtatious smile as she lifted his hand from her leg. “But you'll have to anticipate it for a bit.”

“I look forward to it,” he said with an excited little shudder.

“Hope you're a fan of herpes,” Mariya said as she sat on her bed.

“Fuck off bitch, I'm clean as a whistle.”

“Of course you'd say that.”

“You want proof?”

Emily darted forwards before he opened his pants, swiftly changing the subject. “So uh...where'd you guys come from?”

“None of your business,” Mariya sneered from her corner.

“She's from Ukraine, her family got wiped out in Crimea a couple years ago and then she turned into the mega-bitch you see before you,” Johnny explained.

“This mega-bitch will snap your goddamned neck if you call me that again, and take the court martial with a smile.”

“That's really...I'm sorry you went through that,” Emily meekly said.

“Eh, it was years ago, and I learned something. Humans are pigs. Better to be a wolf than a pig.”

“Does that mean I'm a wolf?” Johnny asked.

“You're a half-breed,” Mariya growled.

“Aww, thanks.”

“How about you, John?” Emily said.

“Born in Straya, spent some ‘time’ in the Americas near the Mexican border. Became a merc for the challenge and have loved every minute. Minus the sex ban, that is.”

“Ah. I'm sure you've got some war stories.”

“I do, let me know if you want to earn them,” he said with a wink.

She looked back over at Bobby, who was keeping to himself. She wanted to be amicable, but she had more than enough of the group already. She took the opportunity created by Johnny and Mariya continuing their fight to unload her myriad pockets into her bed's end table, and then dropped down into her bed again. She slinked back against the wall, rooting back through her drawers for something to entertain herself and drown out her bickering roommates.

Emily nodded thankfully as Barber handed her the packet.

“Civilian and military ID – for the base only, you don’t bring this with you – as well as a map of this floor pointing out the shower and the gym. If you need to smoke or use the tool closet, ask someone. Just cuz you got a card doesn’t mean it’s time to explore.”

“Never been much of an explorer,” Emily sighed, scratching her nose. “Might need some bumpers though, my drawer’s loud as hell.”

“That’s fine, just don’t take anything else, or we’ll know. Any incidents with your roommates?”

“Nope.”

“Alright. Should be action this weekend. Stay frosty.”

“Sounds good.”

The recruiter walked away and Emily walked back into her room, dropping the papers onto her table. She tucked her base ID away and got a new set of clothes, looking at the others. Johnny was wrapped up in some gun magazine and Bobby was keeping to himself as he did, Mariya watching her but not saying anything. She gave a small nod and shoved the rest of her things back into the drawers, exiting the room.

She looked around in the BV hallways, noting the shower and the gym as she went. At the end of the floor, a crooked hallway led to a server room, the only thing in between it and the rest of her floor being the tool closet. Cameras were interspersed in the corners throughout the hallway, rotating slowly between looking down two hallways and covering the next one down the hall as it turned away. She scratched her chin contemplatively and turned on her heel, slipping into the shower area and following the ‘women’ sign.

After wrapping her old clothes into a bundle and stowing it away, Emily walked over the cool tile of the group shower, mercifully empty. Emily looked down at the drain, letting the water splash across her back as she took a few deep breaths. Her relaxation came to a quick halt as she heard footsteps on the tile. Out of all the shower heads in the room, naturally, the footsteps were approaching her. She looked over to see Mariya stripping away the last of her clothes, Emily's head snapping back away from the Ukrainian with a modest blush.

“Good thing we have separate showers, hm? Nice and private, without the boys,” Mariya hummed as she started up the shower next to her.

“Y-yeah.”

Emily kept herself turned away from her, the intimidating merc obviously looking at her unabashed.

“Better view in here, too,” she said with a grin.

“Is that why you're so uninterested in the boys?” Emily asked.

“Oh, I'm interested in anyone, as long as they're interesting.”

She could feel her in her personal space, her muscles tensing to defend herself at a moment's notice.

“You asked a lot of questions back there, but didn't say anything about yourself. American morsel with a pretty face like you could be an easy housewife or babymaker for someone boring.”

Mariya's hands clasped around Emily's legs, causing her to flinch. She looked down at Mariya’s hands, covered in suds and working slowly up her sides.

“What made you so interested in violence, I wonder?”

“World's going to shit,” Emily said a little shakily, “I wanted to have cash and guns when it did.”

“I get that. We're kindred spirits that way, kotenya.”

“Yeah...”

“You know, I've had a lot of conquests in our deployments, but I’ve actually never had a redhead all to myself. What do you say to a little fun?”

She pushed Emily against the wall, pushing herself body against her back. Her hands grabbed Emily's hips eagerly, giving her an aggressive squeeze. Emily shuddered in disgust, hoping to dissuade her.

“You forget the rules?”

“You think they have cameras in here?” she snickered. “We have our privacy, and I certainly don’t give a shit about rules.”

“I don't...I don't swing that way.”

“You're gonna turn me down?”

“It's not personal, just I-”

Mariya flipped her around quickly forcing Emily to look at her angry visage as she put her arm beneath Emily's neck. She bared her teeth at her, a low growl rumbling out from behind them.

“What makes you think you get to say no?”

“Let me go, you psychopath,” Emily said, returning her domineering stare for the first time.

“Whatcha gonna do if I don’t, hm?”

“I'll break your pretty face.”

Emily hit her with a knee strike and threw the arm that was pinning her away, trying to grapple with her and break free from the wall. The merc quickly reversed Emily as soon as she grabbed her, delivering a calculated punch to her stomach that knocked the wind out of her but only left a brief red mark. Mariya’s fingers wrapped around Emily’s neck and slammed her back against the tile wall. Mariya grinned sadistically, letting out a little chuckle as she loosened her grip.

“You've got balls, I like that.”

Mariya let her off the wall, her predatory smile never leaving her face. As she did, she leaned forward and kissed her sloppily, causing Emily to reciprocate slightly just to get it to stop. As she pulled away, she affectionately stroked the strands of Emily's wet hair, straightening them out and causing her to shiver uncomfortably.

“I'll be a patient girl, for now. When base life gets lonely for you, kotenya, let me know. I'll take you for the ride of your life.”

Mariya strode out of the shower, not looking back at her. Emily shuddered, disquieted under the showerhead and already looking for a towel, the water feeling colder than it used to.

Emily tried to dodge the room for as long as possible, but with only the gym available for casual access, she had little excuse to be around the base. She walked into the room timidly, instantly relaxing as she saw Mariya wasn’t there. Johnny winked obviously at her, but he was luckily much more passive than his counterpart. She walked over to her spot in the room, noticing a note stuck to her end table.

Kitten,
Meet me in the tool closet in the next hour if you’re ready to get off.
- M

She snatched the note up and stuffed it into her pockets, slumping down into her bed with a sigh, temporarily freed from the advances of two of her roommates, until Johnny got bored or Mariya came back. She was trying to ignore the libidos of her comrades to see her mission done and her cover secured, but it certainly wasn’t easy. The day was a long and boring one, and there was a lot of unwanted attention to suffer until she could get any work done. She sat quietly, trying to block it all, humming a random tune in her mental library to herself.

“Good song,” Bobby remarked from the bed beside her.

“It gets in your head,” she gave a detached reply.

“Sorry about John. He's a little 'pent up,' with the whole no fraternization policy. Been here the longest.”

“Nothing I'm not used to.”

“Just saying, not all of us are like that. I can introduce him to some rural justice and sock him one, if need be.”

I can sock him one just fine.”

“Hey, just an offer,” he said with a smile.

“Well...thanks,” she replied, trying to stay cold.

“So, where are you from?”

“Rhode Island.”

“Oh, that must've been nice. Beautiful suburbs, no tourists.”

“It was nice to grow up in, boring as a teen though.”

“No doubt. Went to Providence on a field trip once. It was beautiful, but not much to do other than marvel at it. The streets and plazas are totally different from the west.”

“Yeah. Where you from?”

“I grew up in Utah, moved to Ohio come 16 or so.”

“What brought you to this outfit?”

“Just wanted to do something, ya know? My family got killed, I had no military training, didn't know the ass of a rifle from the front. These guys showed me how to shoot, and now I can fight those alien bastards.”

Emily paused, worried that there were more people who fell through the cracks like Bobby. She remembered her real recruiter looking for ‘the best of the best,’ and while there were some outliers, certainly not everyone could get recruited or fit into the refugee area. She looked back at the bunks of Mariya and Johnny, reminding herself that these were bad people, working for even worse people.

“You ok?”

Emily suddenly exhaled, giving a stalwart nod as she snapped back to the conversation after a few rapid blinks.

“Yeah, sorry,” she said, not looking at him. “Just remembering something.”

“I have the same problem, remembering my folks. It's hard with the...images. They don't get out of your head.”

“I know what you mean. It'll get easier.”

“Yeah, that's what Mariya and Barber keep telling me...” he straightened up and cleared his throat, “gotta toughen up to terrible things in war. No room for feelings in a fight.”

“Mmhmm. You'll be fine, kid.”

“Dern sure,” he tipped his hat.

Emily walked slowly along the back wall with her gun wrapped up in her jacket, timing her footsteps carefully while watching the camera in front of her. As she reached the corner that went towards the tool closet, she looked down at the camera looking the other way, already beginning its turn towards her to compensate for the one in front of her turning away. She belted out into a dead sprint, thumping into the corner of the wall as the camera reached her. She waited for a full rotation and slipped into the tool closet, breathing a sigh of relief.

She unraveled her jacket and tucked her gun into her waistband, then started to sift through aerosol cans until she got one with a black cap and pocketed it. She then grabbed the local mop and broom, took the tops off, and stole some duct tape to tie the two sticks together into one long rod. Dropping her gear onto a shelf, she picked up the heaviest handhold thing in the closet, a paintcan, and pressed herself against the wall. A few minutes later and the handle began to jingle.

“Finally ready for your stuffing, ‘ey sweetheart?” Johnny chuckled to himself, pushing open the door and sauntering through the door frame. “Dunno why you’re calling me ‘kitten’ th-”

A loud clang rung out as Emily smashed his head with the bottom of the paintcan, the charmless BV operative falling forwards into a pile. Emily shut the door again and checked his pulse, getting a faint heartbeat despite the hit. She pulled the Swiss Army knife out of her jacket pocket and crouched beside him, tearing the note from Mariya from his hand.

“Sorry lad, you picked the wrong side…”

She slipped the knife under his shirt and sliced through the seam, tearing the fabric in half. After the shirt was off, she unzipped his pants and rifled through his pocket, taking his ID out of his wallet and wedging it under a shelf before putting it back. With a nudge of her foot, he was out of the way and she was collecting her new tools. She peeked out of the door, waiting for the camera overseeing the closet to turn away.

She raised up the rod and rushed over, lightly pushing the end into the side of the camera and holding it steady. The motors whined as it tried to turn against the stick, the gears stressing and then stopping with a telltale plastic snap. She readied the spray can in her pocket and wrapped Johnny’s shirt around her face, being sure to avoid her eyes and cover her hair.

“Ugh…way too much cologne…”

Emily rushed the camera outside the server room door in the same way, quickly spraying a layer of black oil over the lens and crouching beside the door. With a quick turn of her lockpicks, the door swung open, and she tore the homemade balaclava off as she saw the room had no cameras inside. At least ten rows of server farms sat inside, guarded only by the cool blue air conditioners inside and the glass panes forming a walkway to a computer console.

She ran over to the console and plugged her USB in, the tiny stick adding a network capacity for the mercenaries' once closed-in network. A cipher for the mercenaries’ outdated decryption came in a matter of moments. A little bit of folder digging garnered the information Emily was looking for, XCOM Headquarters’ exact latitude-longitude, as well as blueprints of their outdoor facilities and EXALT’s bombers. Emily smiled and backed away from the computer, pulling her H.S.C. out from behind her. She leveled it at the first stack of server computers and pulled the trigger, and all of her senses were overwhelmed at once.

Supercharged slugs blasted through the delicate insides of the computers, blasting their shells open with orange sparks and blue sprays of coolant. The glass panes shattered open as the computers exploded from the mini-shotgun assault, and she turned to the next one, the alarm beginning to blare in her ears. She walked casually down the walkway, blasting apart every piece of equipment and glass within a minute.

Emily burst out of the server room door and sprinted down the hall, opening the closet and tossing in the can and rod next to the unconscious body of Johnny and giggling excitedly. She ran back and slipped into the shower, only a few moments before hearing the thunder of boots rushing down the hall. She poked her head out as the noise quieted, and slipped back into her room, adrenaline and excitement still pulsing through her.

“What are you so happy about?” Mariya scowled as she entered.

“Just did a few miles on the treadmill, got a serious runner’s high going,” Emily grinned.

“A few miles outside of training? What a daddy’s girl you must’ve been, sucking up like that…”

“Gotta keep this body trim,” she ran her hands up her sides tauntingly. “You know how it is.”

Mariya growled loudly, angered by her helplessness to assault her prey with Bobby laying only a few feet away. She moved to get up but was instantly stopped by Barber bursting through the doors.

“Lockdown,” he said in a panic. “Stay in this room for the rest of the night.”

“Yes, sir,” Emily smiled, jumping into her bed.

The door closed and Emily reclined, Mariya staring daggers at her and Bobby flipping through some cheesy airport novel she didn't recognize. She relaxed from the adrenaline rush over the next few minutes, scrambling into her covers and sighing contently after a successful day's work.

Emily woke up from her dreams, instantly surprised to hear Johnny’s voice on the other side of the room. She grumbled as she tossed the stiff linen sheets off of her, trying to marshal enough attention to listen into what he was saying.

“She’s such a freak, man. She asks me to meet her in the closet, calling me all these sexy names like tiger and warrior…”

“John, I really-”

Emily wiped her eyes and swept her feet over to the floor, trying to hear the conversation a little clearer as she shook off the cobwebs.

“So then, I’m about to put it ‘downstairs’ when she pounces on me like a goddamn panther,” Johnny grins. “Rips my shirt off with her bare hands, almost breaks my pants zipper…”

“I’m glad you’re excited John, but I really don’t want to think about Mari-”

“Shhhh, I’m almost done! She starts bouncing up and down, shaking the whole room, and then this big metal thing comes loose from one of the shelves and bonks me right on the head, and she doesn’t even stop, even when I’m fading out.”

“That…doesn’t make any sense.”

Johnny slapped the rookie on the shoulder, scowling. “Sure it does! You should’ve heard her moaning, like a-”

The door opened with a loud bang and two nameless Black Void soldiers rushed in. They gestured to the door, one of them speaking in a low and gravelly command.

“Get out, rooms are being reassigned. The people who did the attack last night are in custody.”

“Where do we go?” Emily asked.

“Squat in the gym until you get your new assignments,” he replied.

“Oi, works for us. Smash night’s about to start,” Johnny grinned, grabbing his things and rushing out the door.

The other two roommates did the same, disappearing from the room. Emily stuffed everything she could into her pockets, grabbing her last set of clothes before she left. As she walked towards the door, the two soldiers walked over to the beds, tossing them and checking the drawers of the tables. She walked over to the showers where she did a quickie shower and change before heading to the gym to wait out what the Black Void were up to with the move.

As she entered the gym, it was clear that it was different from the bland, functionary weight room that she had scouted before. A group of at least three dozen Black Void soldiers huddled around, presumably from all throughout the building. She shoved her way through jeering men and screeching women, all shouting for blood. In the center there was a small ring of mats, Johnny with bandaged-up fists hitting a much weaker looking man. The smaller merc tried to stand his own but his technique was sloppy and panicked, and his muscles were nothing compared to Johnny’s modded physique. Despite already being quite battered, Johnny beat him until he was bleeding and still, raising his hands victoriously as the rest of them cheered.

“Another win for me,” he laughed, pounding his chest once and wiping the blood from his knuckles. “Who’s next, huh?”

“What is this?” Emily sighed, looking at the beaten soldier with worry as he was pulled away from the ring.

“What is this?” a soldier laughed at her. “It’s your turn!”

Before Emily could react, she was shoved through the soldiers in front of her and into the ring, Johnny flashing a predatory grin at her as she straightened up. The soldiers chanted Johnny’s name, eager to see the next recruit beaten down.

“Sorry roomie, no preferential treatment,” he said.

“Not even for a lady?” she smiled tepidly.

“Not even for a lady.”

The sallow-skinned soldier started an exaggerated charge, his arms out as he rushed towards her. Emily quickly slid to the side, backing away from him again and beginning to form a combat stance. She shouted over the chanting of the crowd, trying to reach him.

“Come on, you don’t want to do this. You like me, don’t you?”

“’Course I do, but this isn’t about that. All the new guys get a beating. It’s how you grow!”

Emily gave a light block to a wide swing, pushing his arm away and feigning a sweep kick to back away again.

“’Beating’? You looked like you were going for blood, not character!”

“Well, I don’t do anything halfway, dear,” he winked.

“I heard stories about the last time you fought a newbie. You killed him with a knife, didn’t you?”

“What? I’m not armed, what are you on about?”

Johnny rushed forwards again, faking a kick and taking a swing at her head. Emily swept around it and struck him in the side, rotating around him into a circle. Raising her foot high, she hit the brawler in the side of his head with a roundhouse, sending him stumbling away from her.

“I’m talking about the man whose bed I took. The one you killed, I assume!”

“Gary? I beat his ass, yeah. He was a nervous, shady kid and I didn’t like him, but I didn’t kill him!”

“Bullshit!”

Emily faked a dodge as Johnny came at her again, trying to grapple with her and restrict her far faster movements. She slipped just out of his grasp and got behind him again, kicking him backwards. She rushed forward and launched her knee up, sinking into his stomach and knocking the wind out of his lungs. She did another spin kick and struck his head, knocking him to the ground as he coughed and sputtered.

“How do you…know anything about…that kid…” he gasped.

“I heard a story. And I don’t believe yours.”

“After I kicked his ass…Mariya started chatting him up. Said she was going to get him some bandages and then some drinks.”

“Mariya…” Emily growled.

“I always thought he fucked her and got kicked out for it,” Johnny chuckled. “Didn’t know he ended up dead…”

Emily straddled the soldier and lifted her fist, getting ready to knock him out and finish the fight.

“Not sure how you do either…” he grumbled.

A shrill, deafening whistle shot out from behind the crowd. The soldiers surrounding them backed up like they were hit with a shockwave, quickly gravitating towards the walls and away from everyone else. Standing at the door were two elite guards flanking a dusky woman in a fancy suit, wearing sunglasses despite being indoors. She pointed an authoritative finger towards them.

“Williams, off of him,” she commanded.

Emily raised her hands and backed away slowly, realizing who the woman was quickly.

“Pick yourself up, Lewis,” Mira demanded, approaching Emily and sizing her up. “That was good fighting. Quick but decisive. Reminds me of someone.”

“Thank you, ma’am,” Emily bowed slightly.

“I want you both in my office. Now.”

Mira turned about and walked out of the room confidently, leaving the two imposing elite troopers in the room. As she left, the two elites quickly moved forwards and grabbed Emily and Johnny by the arms, pulling them towards the door. Johnny protested, wiping the sweat and blood from his brow from the fight, angrily being dragged forwards. Emily tried to get her belongings – including the gun in her bag – but was shoved ahead before she could.

The four soldiers loaded into the lift and then traversed through thie lobby, the change in atmosphere growing as they filed into an executive elevator. The ride was smooth and quiet, unlike the barracks’ lift, and the windows inside showed a good few floors of barely manned office space and a daytime view of a somewhat damaged London below. The doors chimed and opened, Mira already seated comfortably in a large chair befitting her massive workspace. The room was almost pure white, sunlight filtering in from windows that stretched from floor to ceiling, and an immaculate marble floor projecting it to the rest of the room. The elites shoved both of them out and pointed to two chairs in front of Mira’s desk, and Emily and Johnny complied nervously.

“What a fight, you two had,” Mira said slowly, taking off her aviators and setting them in a small brass tray on her desk. “Or should I say ‘fights,’ for you, Johnny.”

“I was just…hazing the new guys, Miss. You know how it is.”

“I do. That’s not why I brought you two in here.”

“Um, why are we in here?” Emily said, maintaining a small amount of professionalism. “If I may ask, ma’am.”

“We’re investigating the attack on us last night. We need trustworthy opinions, you see…we are severely lacking in video evidence,” Mira stated. She turned her chair towards Johnny, a smirk crawling on her lips. “What do you think, Mr. Lewis? Do you have any ideas?”

“I…well, before the attack, Emily disappeared,” Johnny said.

Mira rose from her seat, looking out the large glass window of her office. “Is that so? Tell me more. You are one of our oldest soldiers…”

“She also knew about that kid, Gary, even though she got here two days after he vanished. She knew him somehow.”

“This is nonsense, he’s just talking out of his ass,” Emily said, watching Mira pace around her side. “He doesn’t even know me, much less who I know or how-”

Mira raised her hand, silencing her. She walked behind Johnny and placed her hands on the back of his chair, looming over him. “What else, Johnny?” she asked.

“She was taking long showers, and being all t-tough, and she’s just unt-trustworthy!” he stammered, beginning to fidget under his CO’s pressure. “I’m telling you, it’s got to be her, she’s a-”

A loud crack deafened Emily, and she looked over to see a mix of smoke and blood erupting from the chair beside her. Johnny fell over onto the ground, and Mira blew the smoke away from the barrel of her conventional pistol, grinning as the merc’s body crumpled up and bled onto the tile floor.

“I do love to watch a grown man squirm,” Mira sighed, walking back over to her seat and delicately falling back into it.

Emily hyperventilated for a moment, trying to visibly calm herself and get through the ringing in her ears.

“I’m sorry for the noise, and the mess. I just wanted to see what kind of shit he’d spew. We found him in the closet next to the server room that was vandalized, clutching a variety of interesting items. He even left his ID behind after it was all said and done. It’s a shame he decided to betray us.”

“I…I understand,” Emily stammered, looking at the intimidating woman as she placed her pistol onto her desk. “What does this have to do with me though?”

“I just wanted to demonstrate loyalty to one of our new recruits,” she smiled. “From what I saw in that gym, you’re a good prospect, but I still need to see you under fire. Just be a good girl and stay between the lines, and you might go places.”

“What about my room? Am I going back with the others?”

“Bobby has been reassigned, and Mariya has been let go. We found evidence of sexual impropriety along with Johnny’s belongings. I prefer my soldiers to keep to themselves, so they’re hungry for the next run. You’ll be assigned to another floor shortly.”

“Y-yes, ma’am. I apologize for the damage this bastard caused,” Emily said with resolve, pushing the ex-soldier away from her foot.

“A traitor for those computers is a trade I’ll take,” Mira smirked. “We still have our main server intact on B6, and that’s what’s important. I appreciate your concern, however. You’re dismissed.”

“Yes, ma’am. I’ll be in the gym when you’re ready for my next assignment.”

“Good to hear,” Mira waved her away.

The elites opened the elevator door and took her into it, sinking back down to the lobby to store her back into the underground area. She shook off the growing nerves, glad that Johnny and Mariya were out of the picture. She looked up at the sign next to ‘Delta Barracks’ that said B4, sighing with frustration as she plotted her next move.

As Emily suspected, B6 was almost an exact copy of B4, other than there being a lab space instead of a gym, the latter of which they piggybacked from another floor. After sabotaging the cameras, she ran into the server room, this one far taller and wider than the last one. She walked towards the console in the center of the room, pulling out her phone and the USB she used last night. After hooking up into their network, she was able to open a communication link with Alice.

“Hi, Emily!” the android said, her synthesized voice even scratchier than normal due to the poor voice quality. “How’s your mission going?”

“I’m good, about to break the back of BV’s information network. They’re going to know it’s me once I do though, so I need you to tell the Commander I need an extraction right away.”

“No problem,” Alice said, the faint sound of footsteps in the background as she ran through the base’s halls. “I’m sure she can have people scrambled within a half hour.”

Emily tucked the phone in between her shoulder and her cheek and put in keystrokes on the console carefully, sifting through Black Void’s servers in the limited way she knew how. She went through a maze of obviously named folders, hoping to get lucky.

“Double time, if possible. The faster I get out of here, the better.”

“What’s the status of your target?” Alice asked.

“She’s alive, but we can clean her up pretty easily. She stays on the top floor, separated from all of the barracks with only a small group of guards. I figure…strike from above and then below. Enough force downstairs after Mira’s dead and some of the mercs should surrender. The elite troops have Gauss guns and the standard issue is a Banshee knock-off with laser rifles.”

“Sounds good, I’m relaying to the Commander right now. Anything else?”

Emily came across the data backed up from the servers she destroyed, making sure to get rid of it from their network once and for all. She also came across target analyses on several critical Legion and XCOM people. The limited information in them made it obvious that these were stolen from EXALT or something else. It was clear Black Void did intend to attack EXALT and try to take over the entire paramilitary complex.

“Just make sure we have a plan for Mira,” Emily sighed. “Even if it means I’m on my own for a while, we have to put this dynasty in the ground tonight.”

“Alright, Emily. Stay safe.”

“You too, Alice.”

Emily hung up the phone and took out her gun, beginning to fire the Gauss mini-shotgun through the servers and taking them out one by one. Sparks flew and alarms blared, all feeding into a protective and mischievous Emily’s lust for destruction. She was giggling by the time the whir of machinery came to a close, and she packed up what she had used and began to turn towards the exit.

“I guess Mira was right…” a familiar voice cracked out from the back of the room.

As Emily turned around, she saw Bobby at the door, holding a laser rifle up at her. A look of sadness was obvious on his face.

“She said that someone would attack this place tonight, and she thought it might be you,” Bobby said. “I said you seemed nice, but here you are…”

“Bobby, listen to me,” Emily pled, “I’m with XCOM, we’re the ones who are fighting the aliens.”

“The Commander says that XCOM murdered the old CO. That they turn good people into traitors and then use them to raid places so they can sell alien artifacts and guns.”

“That’s not true, the people who switched to XCOM switched because they realized they were working for the wrong people. EXALT was led by a murderer and a rapist, just like Mariya, but even worse.”

“Of course you’d say that…”

“We’ve been fighting the aliens for months! We helped in Moscow, we helped in India, we held off a huge attack-”

“Plenty of people still died! And not all of them got evacuated either!”

“We can’t save everyone, but we try…”

Emily began to turn herself slightly, making herself a smaller target while bringing her hands closer to her gun. She walked a little closer, disguising the motion.

“Black Void wants to save everyone, I know they do,” Bobby said shakily, nodding. “They taught me how to fight and they taught me discipline.”

“They’re only attacking our shipments, Mira hasn’t attacked a single alien ever since she took over!”

“It’s just…about priorities.”

“XCOM’s priorities is saving people, not attacking other humans. And keeping their soldiers happy too! There’s no sex bans or discouraged friendships or ‘contract termination,’ everyone is on the same team! Mira is trying to brainwash you to fight her vendetta for her, she’s just a despot pretending to be a commander!”

“I...I don’t know…”

At that moment, two more Black Void men rushed in behind Bobby, slapping him on the back with pride.

“Nice job, Bobby. You’ll get a promotion for this for sure,” one of them said.

“A true blue XCOM spy,” the other chuckled, “fine piece of ass too. We’re going to enjoy this debriefing.”

“Y-yeah, get over here, slowly,” Bobby commanded.

Emily began walking towards the three troopers, her hand already halfway to her gun. As she approached him, Bobby raised his gun and thrust the butt into one of the trooper’s stomach, grabbing the barrel of the other’s rifle and pulling it away from Emily. In that second, Emily dropped low and pulled her gun from her waist, firing two shots quickly. The first shot hit the groaning soldier square in the head, the second going slightly wide and drilling into the struggling soldier’s shoulder. Bobby pointed his rifle at the surviving one as he flopped onto the ground, smiling as the merc raised his hands halfway.

“Thanks, Bobby,” Emily smiled.

Bobby turned towards her, taking his eye away from the man he had his gun on.

“Yeah...please don’t make me regret this.”

“Bobby!”

The merc pulled out a large pistol from his belt and fired a rapid laser shot into Bobby’s thigh, the turncoat rookie quickly looking back and firing a rifle round into the former’s heart. He dropped down and groaned loudly, gripping the wound with tears growing in the corners of his eyes. Bobby quickly rushed to his side and checked it, tying off the bleeding.

“You’re alright, Bobby,” Emily sighed. “You’re actually lucky it wasn’t a real bullet, it would’ve penetrated to your artery.”

“I-I-I don’t feel lucky right now…!”

“Relax,” she pat his back, “we’ll get you out of here and you won’t even have a scar within a week.”

“Al-alright, okay, right, okay!”

Emily stuffed the H.S.C. behind her and picked up the other laser rifle, looking it over briefly. She pat down the dead soldier and took his grenade, spare batteries, and lighter from his pockets before moving on. She pulled out the miniature wire camera from her jacket and checked under the door, one twitchy looking soldier standing in the open with his laser rifle trained on the door. Emily pulled the gloves off the merc’s body beneath her and started to prop him up.

“Bobby, some help please,” she groaned, trying to pick up the armored merc.

“Uh…why are you trying to pick him up?”

“To throw him out the door. We need the guy out there to hesitate, and shooting his teammate will make him do that. Get it?”

“Oh! Right, okay!”

Emily and Bobby hefted up the merc and straightened him up as much as possible, opening the door a crack. They made the merc’s body take a simulated step out, and the man in the hall instantly fired, laser shots melting into his armor. The trigger-happy merc gave a look of shock as the body fell down in the hallway, enough for Emily to poke out and shoot him with her rifle. Emily motioned for the rookie to cover her as she moved through the hall, turning the corner and looking down the hall to the rest of the floor. She turned back and opened the tool closet for this floor, gesturing for Bobby to get inside.

“Uh…that’s a pantry, not an exit.”

“I know,” Emily sighed. “We can’t take the base solo, we need to hole up until XCOM gets here.”

“A closet though? What if they throw a grenade?”

“I’ll think of something! Just get in the closet!”

“Okay, okay!”

Bobby jumped into the closet and Emily heard footsteps approaching the area, taking her rifle in hand. As the first soldier rounded the corner, Emily peeked out and fired a long burst of laser fire at him, forcing him into cover.

“Keep your distance!” Emily shouted. “I got more than enough batteries and there’s no other entrance, you come into this hallway and you’re fucking dead!”

“Fuck you! There’s no way out!” one of the soldiers yelled back.

One of them poked their heads out and Emily instantly fired on it, forcing them to hide again.

“I’m serious! You goddamn rookies have nothing on an XCOM officer!”

“Emily, what should I do?” Bobby asked.

“Find something flammable or explosive. We’re going to make a siege.”

“Okay!” he shouted back, beginning to sift through the jugs of chemicals in the shelves.

--------

“Commander, we have the traitors trapped in Foxtrot, with elites guarding the lift. We’ve already taken three losses trying to storm them, but they are trapped. It’s only a matter of time. Your orders?”

Mira took off her suit jacket, revealing a tank top and two shoulder holsters, holding a conventional and an advanced pistol each.

“Get a squad together, six to ten. Only the best, and give them the cleanest armors and the Gauss weapons we recovered from EXALT. We’ll wait until they’re tuckered out and then put holes in them.”

“By your command, ma’am,” the elite bowed, exiting the room.

Mira reclined, dipping her seat back with a smirk. She reached under her desk and pulled out a microphone connected to the PA system downstairs, letting out a light chuckle and clearing her throat.

(Chameleon Suit available for Scouts, Shredder Rocket for Rocketeers)

Details:
Alpha Team will be responsible for extracting our covert operative, Amelia Fischer. We have reason to believe she is holded up near the server room in the base's sixth basement floor. Access the cargo elevator in the main entrance, which you can likely find by the resistance that you will come across. Make your way down to B6, and fight your way through the corridors and barracks, which will likely feel familiar as you make your way through. Fischer's status is unknown at this time, so make haste.

Beta Team will enter the building through the roof top helipad, where you will find Mira Wade's office in the top floor of the massive corporate building. She will no doubt be well guarded, as she would be a fool not to suspect we are on our way. Deal with her, and make your way down to the ground floor once she is dealt with, as Alpha team will no doubt need assistance getting out once the find Fischer. If Mira flees, she'll no doubt flee into the 'safety' of her underground base, and you can deal with her on your way to Alpha Team.

Enemies:
Four (4) units of three (3) troops armed with light armor and laser weaponry (per unit)
Four (4) units of (3) troops armed with medium armor and Gauss weaponry (per unit)
Two (2) units of three (3) troops armed with medium armor, Gauss weaponry, and various gene-mods

Special Enemy Notes:
Alpha Team Boss
Nate Barber
Armaments: Gauss Autorifle, Laser Pistol
Equipment: Titan Armor, Alien Grenades x4
A typical elite, Barber works as a part-time doorman and part-time RA, but yearns for the days when he shot and slashed with the rest of them. The attack on BVC has afforded him this opportunity, and he's gotten the pinnacle of their equipment stolen from EXALT, and has been entrusted with killing Emily and defending the underground portion of the base. He will likely be hunkered down by the lift, either on B6 or the ground floor.

Beta Team Boss
Mira Wade
Armaments: Custom Alloy Strike Rifle, EXALT-styled Laser Pistol, Desert Eagle
Equipment: Kevlar Vest, Flashbang Grenades x2, MEC Keys, PA Controls
The ruthless, over-compensating commander of BVC, Mira was ambushed on the upper floors of her shell company's headquarters, and primarily will support and retreat behind her elite troops in the interest of accessing her larger equipment

Conditions for Completion:

The safe extraction of Amelia Fischer, and the capture or elimination of Mira Wade. Fischer's safety takes precedence over all else.

Civilians:
Civilian staff on the sight is unknown, but everyone should be treated with caution.

Mira smiled as she locked down the PA button again. “I don’t care how long you stay down there. Soon you’ll be hungry and tired, and the second you blink, my men will kill you. Don’t worry about help coming either, we have the ground floor locked down, and they’re all eager to kill some of your friends.”

A low drone came from the roof, followed by the surefire signs of footsteps and gunfire. Mira looked over to the closest elite, who radioed the functionary guard on the roof, receiving no response.

“They’re here,” she said darkly.

“Ma’am, your new armor was moved to B1 as requested, but they’ll be here in a matter of moments,” the elite noted. “Do we…have a plan?”

“I didn’t expect them to come from the roof, okay?” she shouted, pulling her pistol and waving it angrily. “I just need a minute…”

“Ma’am…the mic,” he said, pointing to the glowing red button on her radio.

“Motherfucker…” she growled, turning off the PA and turning her attention to the roof access. “Get in cover! If we can stop whoever they have here, we won’t have any problems!”

“And you, ma’am?”

“I’m going to stay by the door,” she stated, pulling out a burst-fire gauss rifle. “I’ll provide support until I can get my armor.”

Her personal guard looked distressed, worried she was going to run. Still, he leveled his rifle and took point across from the roof access door. The other four Black Void elites in the room got into position behind couches and desks, preparing for XCOM’s entry as the heavy pounding of boots rapidly approached.

Operation Counter Strike, Part 1 – Covert Team

Emily wiped her eyes, over an hour of standing and training her rifle already getting tiring. She was also tired of re-adjusting her shirt to cover her nose, the smell of the chemicals on the floor getting irritating every time she smelled it.

“I don’t care how long you stay down there. Soon you’ll be hungry and tired, and the second you blink, my men will kill you,” Mira taunted. “Don’t worry about help coming either, we have the ground floor locked down, and they’re all eager to kill some of your friends.” There was a moment of static noise and low mumbles before Mira spoke again. “I didn’t expect them to come from the roof, okay? I just need a minute…motherfucker!” The PA cut out with a loud crackle and Emily smiled.

A few panicked orders came out from down the hall, and five soldiers began moving forwards, stepping carefully through the thin layer of liquid on the ground and watching the corner she was hiding behind. Emily opened the silver lid of the lighter she stole from the server room mercs, a small orange flame popping out of the top. She tossed it into the hall, a plume of flames bursting out from around the corner, forcing Emily to back farther away. She pulled out her H.S.C. and took shots as a couple of them tried to escape, the last of the sieging squad succumbing to the trap. After a few minutes, the liquid burned out and the path was clear.

“Come on, Bobby. Time to get out of here.”

“That was…brutal…” he said sadly.

“I know, I’m not happy about it either,” she said, steeling herself, “but it was the only way to do it. Sometimes you have to fight dirty…”

“It doesn’t sound much different…”

“Fighting a war is painful and uncomfortable, no matter what side you’re on. It’s the cause that makes it worth it.”

“Alright,” Bobby nodded. “Let’s go.”

As Emily rounded the corner and passed the showers, a panicked looking merc in rookie gear rushed into the open and then stopped dead in his tracks, looking at the XCOM operative with recognition.

“Y-y-you killed them all?” he asked.

“Just get out of the way, and I won’t have to kill you,” Emily said sternly.

He looked back, as if checking for someone. “I can’t…”

The merc raised his gun but Emily shot first, hitting him square in the chest and sending him falling onto his back.

“We’re almost there, Bobby. Stay close.”

“A-alright,” he nodded.

As they passed the disabled merc, she told him to find a medkit before he bled out, giving him some semblance of hope as he tried to recover from the shot. They got past the barracks rooms and were almost to the lift when they heard the sound of pulse and laser fire nearby, further indicating the assault was underway. As they walked into the lift room, Bobby stopped, panting and listening as the PA system in the barracks crackled to life again.

“Are those your friends? Will they ext—”

Bobby’s sentence suddenly got cut off with another deafening bang, his body falling in front of her seemingly in slow motion, his head turning to reveal a gruesome crimson hole in the side of his head. Mariya smiled darkly behind him as the silver barrel of her revolver moved towards her. Emily moved back and aside as the cylinder rotated and another flash ripped out of her gun, the bullet barely missing the operative’s ear as she moved.

Before she could adjust her aim, a kick from Emily’s boots crunched into the Ukrainian’s fingers, sending the revolver flying out of reach. Mariya yanked the serrated knife out of her belt, clutching it tightly in her hand as Emily pulled away. Emily crouched into a combat stance, glancing sadly at the man she had accidentally led to his death before hardening again.

“You’re going to pay for that, you fucking animal!” Emily shouted.

“The only thing I’m paying for is a bitch filet,” Mariya grinned.

As Mariya stalked towards her, Emily’s eyes grew orange and she reached out with her hand, seeking to grip the psychopathic woman’s mind. As soon as she began searching for fears, a ringing blasted into her ears, causing her to whine as she recovered. Mariya dived forwards and ripped a deep cut through Emily’s arm before she was able to repel her. Emily pulled back and tried to ready her H.S.C., but Mariya quickly followed up and grabbed her arm, wrenching the weapon from her hands. As she tried to plunge the knife into her, Emily caught the girl’s wrist and threw her away, creating some space.

“You have feedback too, huh?” Emily sighed, holding her hand to her bleeding arm.

“You think I don’t have every fancy science toy I could fit in my body?” Mariya laughed wolfishly. “I’m the goddamn future, a perfect soldier. If you cut me, my skin would knit itself together…not that you could ever cut me in the first place!” She began dashing towards her again, twirling her knife with a flourish. “Let’s see how much blood I can get out of you before you break!”

Emily wanted to block or deflect her attack, but the cut was so deep that every attempt to raise her left arm caused her pain and an uncomfortable amount of bleeding. She quickly sidestepped the attack, Mariya wheeling around and smiling at her, unfazed by her miss. She rushed forwards again and Emily sidestepped in the other direction, this time raising her knee in place of her dodge. The hard joint sank into her stomach and she let out a forced cough as Emily set up. Still clutching the wound on her arm, she spun up and leaped, kicking her across the face with one foot before finishing the spin and crunching her second into her skull. Mariya let out a small yelp on the second hit, falling backwards.

“Stop moving, kitten,” Mariya sneered. “Don’t you know it’ll make you bleed faster?”

“I appreciate your concern,” Emily replied, backing away from her again. “I don’t need my arms to kick your ass though.”

Mariya charged forwards again, this time heading straight for her with intent to impale her on her knife. Emily dropped low to the floor with blinding speed, sending her leg up as her body inverted into a scorpion kick. Emily’s boots crunched into the merc’s nose, shattering it and causing her to recoil in pain. Emily leapt back to her feet and gave her another roundhouse kick, sending her and her weapon to the ground. Mariya tried to hold the stream of blood coming from her nose, reaching for the knife with the other hand. She stretched out until Emily’s boot stepped onto her hand, the tiny bones letting out nauseating pops and cracks as she tried to pull it away.

Emily walked back into the corner of the room, picking up her gun and walking towards her. She activated it again as she looked down at Mariya with anger that had been quickly sanded down to apathy. The merc shivered and gasped, wide-eyed and scowling with blood on her lips, cradling her mangled primary hand.

“Any last words?” Emily asked coldly.

“D-die…” she replied.

Mariya scrambled across the floor and picked up her knife, a flash of desperation and insanity blaring from her deep blue eyes. She rushed forwards and raised her arm, swinging downwards weakly with her off-hand. Emily saw the attack and caught her wrist with her good arm, stepping around the woman and sending the knife in a new arc back towards its owner. Mariya’s eyes went wide as the knife slipped into her abdomen with ease, the first real recognition of consequences Emily had ever seen. She staggered backwards, screaming in pain as she tried to steady it by the handle, another source of crimson gushing out of her with every movement. Emily shook her head at her struggle.

“I almost feel bad for you…” Emily sighed, feeling numb and tired. She pulled her H.S.C. and pointed it at Mariya’s heart. “Almost.”

A bundle of Gauss pellets blasted into the psychotic woman, sending her body flying back and ending her life far cleaner than the blade would. She tucked her handheld shotgun away, stepping through the ash, blood, and body-coated floors and into the lift. The doors screeched closed around her and the lift began to rise, giving Emily one last solemn look at the corpses in the room.

Operation Counter Strike, Part 2 – Alpha Team

Dallas gave the signal as the last of his team jumped out. The Skyranger began hovering and slowly ascended up the building, carrying Desmond and his squad for the roof. He looked over his troops on the steps of Black Void headquarters, giving an assuring nod.

“We’ve got one of our own in there, let’s go get her out,” he shouted, masking his nervousness.

“Let’s go already,” Kieran replied, “we don’t have any time to waste.”

“Right, let’s move.”

As the squad burst through the fancy glass doors of the ground floor, a couple civilians and four Black Void soldiers in light armor and cradling black-plated laser weapons. They fanned out quickly as the XCOM squad raised their weapons, the receptionist and her civilian counterpart ducking for cover. The entrance guards were no match, one of them running into a stream of fire from Nika’s Autoblaster and another one dropping to Sven’s sniper rifle. Nika and Maggie Beckett moved to put suppression on the surviving two, and the mercs began to panic. One hunkered down, getting blasted by an advancing Dallas, and the last being picked off while trying to change covers. The squad fanned out, Dallas approaching the civilians.

“How do we get the doors to the basement open?” Dallas asked.

“I can’t…I can’t say,” the receptionist said slowly.

“I need to get in there now,” he slammed his fists onto the desk, “tell me how to open the doors!”

“P-please, I have a f-family,” the woman cowered, her hands in the air.

“Hey,” Kieran said softly, putting his arms on the desk. “Don’t worry, we’re not here to hurt you, or anyone else. We just want our friend back, and she’s trapped downstairs. We can shoot through, sure, but that’s not why we’re here.” He smiled comfortingly. “So, help us out, please?”

“I…I…” the woman looked around nervously, then reached onto her desk and tossed Kieran a small card with a magnetic strip. “It’ll open the wall, but there’s lots of people down there…you’ll never get through them all…”

“We’ll try to pass as many as possible. We don’t want unnecessary gunfire any more than you do.”

The woman nodded nervously, getting up from her desk and walking over to the nearest dead merc, seeing if she could help him. The squad walked over to the back wall and Kieran swiped the card, the large door buzzing and rumbling as it opened. They all piled into the lift quickly, punching in the command to go to B6. As they descended, they heard the PA fade into audible range, Mira’s panicked voice being broadcast throughout the bunker.

“I didn’t expect them to come from the roof, okay? I just need a minute…motherfucker!” The PA cut out with a loud crackle.

“Sounds like Desmond’s having fun,” Nika grinned.

“Mira doesn’t have a chance of getting out of here, not without leaping out of a window,” Sven noted. “I’d be panicked too…if I was dumb enough to stay on the top floor.”

“Hubris is a powerful thing.”

The lift scratched and whined loudly, stopping instantly a few inches below the door to B2. The controls turned completely unresponsive, and the door opened.

“Ominous…” Kieran whispered.

Dallas walked up to the door and peeked out, a quick stream of Gauss bullets flying in through the doorway and into the wall. Every effort to get an eye on them was rewarded with gunfire, and eventually Dallas stopped trying, adjusting his helmet.

“Seems like a barracks section or something,” he said. “They’re hiding in other rooms and firing out.”

“Sounds like a flash is the way to go,” Sven murmured.

“Wait, I can get some intel,” Nika responded.

Nika closed her eyes and reached out with her mind, barely sensing the walls beyond the one she was hiding behind, and feeling the presence of the others. After a few moments of concentration, she had a mental map of the hallway, as well as the positions of the shooters, and quickly relayed it to the team before she forgot. The team quickly pooled their grenades and selected the ones that would get the job done, picking up an alien grenade, two flashbangs, and a chem.

“Explosive first,” Dallas said, readying his arm and tossing the alien grenade into the hallway. After it exploded, he signaled to the others. “Now!”

Karen, Kieran, and Maggie all stepped out with their grenades, throwing them with precision into the rooms that held the troops. A plume of green burst from one along with flashes of pink light from the other two, two well-armored troops stumbling out covering their eyes or their mouth. Nika and Sven set up their rifles and gunned down anyone escaping the chem room while Dallas and the SHIV dashed forwards, cleaning out the stunned rooms quickly. As the last soldier in the barracks fell, Dallas walked over to one of their bodies, picking up their helmet and ripping out the communication line.

“Anyone there?”

“Status?” a gruff voice responded.

“Enemies eliminated, we need the lift working,” Dallas stated.

“All of them?”

“Yes, all of them,” Dallas said sternly. “Did I stutter?”

“Right…lift’s working again.”

“Roger that,” Dallas dropped the comm and turned back towards the squad. “Lift’s working, let’s get moving.”

The squad went back through the barracks, stepping carefully over the bodies they created. As they loaded back into the lift, the controls popped back in, asking for a new selection. With a rumble, they began moving again, sinking past B3, and then B4.

“Good work back there, Nika,” Dallas nodded.

“Thanks. Remind me to thank Atka, I’m really getting good at that,” she grinned.

Kieran looked at the maintenance lift, inspecting the controls and wires angrily. “Can’t this thing go any faster?”

“She’ll hold her own,” Dallas assured. “She always does.”

“I know, it just…it needs to go faster.”

“We’ll get there, just relax.”

As the lift passed B5, it screeched to a halt again, the door opening.

“This isn’t B6,” Dallas noted. “Did you mess with it?”

Kieran stepped away from the controls. “No, I was just looking. It stopped on its own.”

Dallas grumbled with irritation, moving back towards the open door. As he stepped near it, a new burst of Gauss shots fired at him, causing him to jump back. “God damn, I wish they’d stop doing that! There’s someone down the hall, only one guy this time.”

“I got this,” Maggie said, readying her rifle. She peeked out from the side of the wall and fired a round of pulse shots that bounced off his armor. A new stream of Gauss shots fired out, one catching the infantry in the arm as she pulled back away. “Fuck,” she held the puncture in her armor, “he’s got Titan armor…”

Karen rushed to her and quickly healed the infantry’s arm, pulling out the round and spraying the medkit over the shallow wound.

“Titan? How’d he get a set of that?” Nika wondered.

“They were hitting our convoys,” Dallas replied. “Maybe we should toss a flash and just gun him down.”

“Sounds like a good plan.”

Kieran handed over his psi grenade, the last stunning grenade in the group. Dallas tossed the grenade into the hallway and waited as it burst open, then Dallas, Sven, and Nika all popped out to fire. The soldier laughed from behind a helmet, completely black and made of alloys, opening back up into a visor. He reached onto his belt and tossed two grenades down the hall, raising his massive machine gun to block some of the shots coming his way. The squad quickly scrambled back towards the lift to get away from the doorway, a couple of green bursts blasting through the room. Two more grenades flew in, this time going farther into the room. The squad huddled against the wall, the shockwaves giving out just a few feet from them.

“Jesus,” Nika said.

“Come on out, if you aren’t in bits and pieces,” the man taunted, the loud bangs of his footsteps rumbling through the hall.

“We gotta use a rocket. You ready for this, Nika?” Dallas asked.

“Gladly,” she replied, readying the launcher from her back.

The squad stacked back up on the doorway, getting ready to fire on the heavily armored man again. Dallas gave a small jump and readied his rifle, giving an assuring nod.

“I’ll distract him, then you fire away,” he said.

Dallas dashed in through the door, running to the closest corner as fast as he could. The heavy armored merc levelled his machine gun and started firing, the bullets trailing closer and closer behind him as he got to cover. Nika popped out, launcher in hand, disengaging the safeties and letting the explosive rocket fly through the hallway. The man quickly raised the gun in his hand with a shout, the rocket blasting into the front of him, pushing him back and forcing him to fall to his knees.

“Gottem,” Nika cheered.

The man’s armor rumbled back to life, despite the mangled machine gun in his hand, almost melted into halves from the rocket’s blast. He pulled himself up to one knee, and then to his feet.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Nika shouted.

“It’ll take...more than that...to stop me…” the man grunted loudly.

Suddenly, a green explosion wrapped around him, blasting his armor to shreds as his body flung into the wall, denting the metal side of the hallway with a loud clang. Behind the explosion stood a ragged-looking woman in a leather jacket, a H.S.C. in her hand. As the green residue cleared, it became obvious who it was as she stepped next to the crumpled body of armor and ammo that once guarded the hall. She looked down at the patch on his armor that said “Barber” and quickly fired the mini-shotgun into his helmet, ensuring that he was dead.

“Sorry, boss. Maybe you should’ve done your research,” Emily mumbled.

Dallas quickly rushed over, Emily smiling the second she saw his face. She peeled back the visor on his helmet and kissed him passionately, disregarding the rest of the squad as they ran over. As she backed away, she gave a sigh of relief as she looked over everyone else.

“I’m glad to see you again,” Emily said softly.

“You too,” Dallas smiled back.

“How about us?” Nika joked, nudging into her.

“All of you too,” Emily nodded, hugging her and Sven, and then Kieran. Maggie and Karen fidgeted a bit at the exclusion, but didn’t know her all that well anyway. “We need to get upstairs and make sure Mira dies, she has way too much information to live,” Emily continued.

“Desmond is handling her, but we should make sure he’s alright,” Dallas nodded. “Reception down here is pretty shit.”

“Yep, let’s move,” Nika said.

The squad rushed back to the maintenance lift, its controls finally back to life and untampered with. As the lift began ascending again, Karen attended to the cut on Emily's arm with her medkit, trying to clean the thin sheen of blood down her upper arm. Mid-ascent, huge and loud footsteps were banging across the ground floor above, causing a bit of concern.

“So, uh, about that...can you make this thing go faster?” Dallas asked, looking towards Kieran.

“I can try…”

Operation Counter Strike, Part 4 - Beta Team

Desmond did a quick reload on his weapon as he and his squad fought their way into the enemy building from the roof. He had advised his men before hand to be wary in the unknown enemy territory, he knew how much they would be getting themselves into skill wise, but their knowledge of the building was limited and didn’t know if they had set up any traps.

Taking a quick glance over his squad, they had arrived to a rather prominent double door, this having to be their HVT’s room. “Keep eyes and ears open. We have little cover so stay low and grab anything that can stop a shot. Jubjub will take point on the door, Masambe will take point behind and lay down suppressing fire. Sylvia, Letz, and Sarah, you take left. Me and John will take right. We move on my mark.”

The squad nodded their heads in conformation and held their weapons up at the door. “Good luck people.” He held his rifle and got out a Psi Grenade. He pressed the activator and it began to glow a slight red. “Mark!”

Jubjub hovered forward through the doors and Desmond rolled the grenade inside. It went off and the team moved forward to get into position.

Mira quickly hid as she saw a grenade coming in, but two of the elite troopers were not so lucky. As they stumbled, she yelled angrily at them while steadying her rifle from the back of the room.

“The team moved quickly, finding cover where they could and aimed their rifles at the troops, still disoriented by the stun. Sylvia shot and missed the troop in a fit of excitement and adrenaline, leaving Sarah to clean up her mistake with a clear blow straight through the head.

Masambe did his job behind Jubjub and started to open up around the leader’s general position as John and Desmond both fired shots into the second Elite. “Give it up Wade! We taking you out of this building. You choose whether you leave it alive or dead. Don’t make the same mistake Logan did.”

“You son of a bitch…” Mira’s eyes narrowed, then she looked to her troops. “The loud mouthed one is the leader, put him in the ground!”

The merc elites fired a round of suppressive fire towards Desmond while Mira used her position to retreat into the elevator, commanding it to go down. “You won’t make it out of here alive, XCOM bastards!” she yelled as the doors closed.

Desmond was huddled behind a support pillar but it was slowly getting chewed away by the fire. John deftly moved himself away from Desmond and got into a decent firing position and returned it towards the mercs. Jubjub turned his turret on the enemies and also added to the fire to get the heat of their leader.

Sarah had a string of psionic energy enter the mind of one of the mercs and he yelled out in pain as Sylvia made up for her last mistake, sending three well placed shots into his chest. Jubub took a few rounds of fire but the shots barely did anything as Letz put laser shots into the Elite.

Desmond quickly ran from his cover and towards the elevator, ordering his squad to form up. “We need to pursue target and get her down, stay close and stay frosty. No telling what tricks she has planned for us.”

As the elevator arrived with a ding, the squad poured in and went down in pursuit of the Black Void leader. The squad watched the electronic number in the corner sink, suddenly stopping at 5 with a loud metal hiss. The speaker above the elevator’s buttons crackled to life.

“Did you forget this is my building?” Mira taunted with a small laugh. “Everyone on the upper levels needs to get to floor five, I’m almost to my new toy.”

“Well this is great, what are the plans now sir?” Sarah asked, staring at Desmond along with the rest of the squad.

He thought for a second and looked around, mainly at the elevator doors.

Sylvia was rapidly pressing the ‘Door Open’ button but nothing happened. “So are we trapped here until they come for us?

Desmond shook his head and pulled his sword off his back. “Masambe, set up on the ground. We are going to pry these doors open and we need a gun to protect us while we work. Sarah and Letz, help me with the door.”

“What do I do?” Sylvia asked excitingly.

Desmond sighed, he was out jobs so he tried to think of something quick. “Just…” He gave a glace at the gunner. “I guess just lay down fire with Masambe. We don’t have much use for your skills right now so just sit tight.” Putting the tip of his blade against the crack of the door he looked at his squad. “Ready?”

There were nods all around and Desmond gave the sword a shove into the crack, lodging it slightly and hit the hilt with the stock of his gun. The sword went in further and he grabbed it hard pulling it to the side.

“The enemy is rapidly approaching, I suggest we move fast.” Sarah intoned, her eyes glowing blue.

With another tug, the door cracked open, both Sarah and Letz grabbing a side and pulling hard on them. Masambe inched forward and his Autoblaster stuck out slightly as he began to unload outside. As the squad moved out of the elevator, they were able to see that the room was some kind of laboratory or manufacturing lab, with far more remedial experiments than XCOM’s. Four lower-ranked soldiers rushing in from a staircase across the room, quickly getting into cover. Already in the room were two elites with Gauss machine guns, hiding behind two solid pillars. One of them peeked out with an alien grenade in hand, tossing it towards the elevator.

Desmond was a step ahead of him as he quickly flung the grenade back with his telekinesis and got behind a table, taking potshots at the gunner as the grenade blew the front of the pillar half away. Masambe stayed behind in the elevator as he fired straight across the room at the group of four who had come down the stairs. Sarah was crouched behind him, taking careful timing to blow away one of the four before they rest got lower behind the protection.

John had been pinned down by the second gunner, Sylvia moving past him carefully avoiding fire with her Lightning Reflexes and Chameleon Suit. With her H.S.P.B in hand, she blasted a powerful shot at the gunner and he fell over in pain as it burned through his armor, leaving him incapacitated.

Letz pulled out an AP grenade and threw it over the cover and at the three hunkered down grunts. They tried to scramble but the blast killed one immediately and injured the others, who now exposed fell to fire from both John and Jubjub, who had floated out of the elevator as it acted as cover for the sniper.

The last Elite gunner was no match against the enemy and died as he tried to run. After a regroup, the team looked for a way downstairs. The radio of the last elite jumped to life, audible from the damage to his armor.

“Snyder, Lambert, what’s the status of those XCOM troops?” Mira shouted. “I’m on the ground floor, get everyone to regroup on me!”

John picked up the radio and gave a hopeful look. “Enemy down ma’am. Moving to rally point now.”

“You sound girlier than usual, Snyder,” Mira sneered. “Get to the bunker, there’s another team causing havoc down there.”

“Roger.” He replied, hooking the radio onto his belt. “Might as well have a little intel on the way.” He stated with a sigh. “I am not girly…” He mumbled.

There was a slight chuckle from the squad but they were quickly on the move and were moving down as they made their way to the lower levels. The staircase ended at the ground floor, needing to move to another portion of the floor to access the basement. As the first soldier opened the door, a few panicked sounds came from around the room, the area occupied despite the bloodstains around the floor. Four Black Void troopers quickly scrambled into position.

“Damn it, I thought they were dead,” one of them shouted.

“Don’t let them get farther than this!” another responded.

With John and Sylvia snaking their ways in first, they were the first to grab the best cover and laid down covering fire as the rest poured in. Masambe was out of the fight as his gun need a little maintenance work after it malfunction slightly and he became the prime target of fire. His Titan Armor took a lot of fire, the Lasers doing very little to it. Desmond threw an alien grenade into the group, killing two who were caught unaware.

Sarah took a potshot at one of the troops behind cover, the shot grazing his shoulder. Sylvia and John flanked the same soldier on either side and dispatched of him as Jubjub did a quick maneuver on the fourth and final enemy. The Hover Shiv got a spray of fire in return before it put down the trooper but had taken a hit in one of the weak spots in the armor.

“Sylvia, hand me your Arc Thrower.” Desmond ordered and the scout replied, handing it to him. He quickly switched settings from stun to repair and begin to do some field work. “Reload and keep an eye out. When Jub is repaired and the rest of you are squared away we haul ass.”

It took time but the Shiv was fully repaired and everyone had their guns checked and reloaded, the team looked over to the room holding the maintenance lift, pressing on to either meet up with Alpha or take down Wade.

Operation Counter Strike, Part 5

As the room cleared, Desmond and his squad made their way towards the hidden door in the wall, presumably left open by Dallas on their way through. A loud thump slammed behind the wall, causing them to back away as they looked for the source. Another thump rammed into the wall, and then again, causing cracks and chips in the stone. With one final thundering punch, the wall collapsed, and a massive MEC suit emerged from the rubble and the dust. Light from the lobby reflected off its sheer black armor plating, and a large grenade launcher and railgun pointed towards the XCOM soldiers. In its cockpit, Mira sat with her hands around intricate controls, laughing.

“It might just be a prototype, but I’ve been told it’s basically the real deal, without your sick surgeries,” Mira shouted over the MEC’s speakers. “I can’t wait to get some blood on these tires!” The barrel of her railgun started to glow, rotating towards Desmond.

Desmond glanced at his squad. “Scatter!” Desmond ran to the right and the rest of his squad moved in all directions away from the MEC.

Mira’s railgun fired, burning a hole into the ground where Desmond once was. She turned it towards the pillars in the room, looking to chew through ones where the squad scattered into. With another flash, her railgun blasted into the center of the pillar Malkovich was hiding behind, chewing almost completely through the stone.

“Just a matter of time,” she mumbled over the speaker.

“Letz, you know what to do!” Sylvia stated, hunkering down. “And anytime would be nice.”

The rocketeer nodded and pulled the launcher off of his back and aimed a shredder at the large MEC, letting it fly. The rocket drilled into the abdomen of the MEC suit, bursting into a thousand pieces of searing shrapnel that easily embedded in the advanced armor. Mira turned her gun towards Letz, the shoulder launcher on her back suddenly engaging and pointing forwards as well.

“Who brings rockets to an indoors raid anyway?” Mira thought out loud.

A shot from the railgun melted through Letz’ cover, and a follow-up grenade blasted the rocketeer off his feet and into the far wall. She let out a loud laugh as he tried to get back up. The small room behind Mira made a loud metallic clang and squeak as the lift stopped at the floor, Alpha Team and Emily in tow. Nika already had her rocket launcher loaded and aimed as the rest of the squad moved forwards, looking for advantageous cover behind the MEC. Mira tried to turn her suit but stumbled, her coordination with controls far worse than with the standard augments an XCOM MEC trooper would receive.

“Suck on this, EXALT wannabe,” Nika grinned.

A loud whistle ripped out from the room as the rocket flied forwards, slamming into the center of Mira’s back and causing her to stumble forwards, more shrapnel embedded in the other end of the suit. Everyone successfully got behind a pillar before the massive suit could turn, other than Karen, who was running along the walls to help the injured Letz before Mira could finish him off. As Mira finally finished her turn, she leveled her railgun and blasted through the receptionist desk that Kieran was hiding behind, causing him to shift cover quickly.

“More of you?” Mira mused. “You’re like rats, turn around and even more run out of the cracks…”

Sarah’s rifle hissed as she shot the launcher on the MEC’s back to prevent any further problems from it. “We could say the same about you…” She mumbled.

“We are nothing alike! You’re traitors, and murderers,” Mira insisted, catching her eye on the armorless Emily and taking a titanic step forwards. “I will avenge Logan and kill you all! I will!”

Mira took a shot towards Emily, causing her to dive away as the railgun fired straight through the corner of her cover. She scrambled behind Jabberwock, trying to fit her frame completely behind it as it fired into Mira’s suit.

“Don’t suppose you guys have any grenades left,” Dallas called to Desmond. “We’ve used all of our good ones…”

Desmond took the two remaining alien grenades he had and tossed them at Dallas’s team, leaving the psi ones for himself. “I can distract her, just be sure to lay down fire when I do!” He ordered. Desmond looked at Dallas for a response of confirmation before springing into action.

“I’ve got you,” he nodded and ran back to his team, distributing the grenades and getting ready to fire.

Desmond took a deep breath and stepped out of his cover. “Hey Wade, you want the person who killed your father? Well here he is!” Desmond shouted, holding out his arms. “He executed my friend in cold blood in front of me, so I executed him in turn!”

“You bastard!” she screamed into the speakers, the machinery whining as its volume peaked. The MEC began turning again, its legs slowly trying to rotate in place. “I will destroy you!”

Dallas directed his heaviest firepower towards the MEC’s joints, using Nika’s Autolaser, Beckett’s Pulse Rifle, the SHIV’s cannon, and his own Scatter Blaster all against the suit’s primary weapon. With the sheer firepower chewing through the weakened alloy of its elbow, it gave way to its own weight, the railgun ripping off of its owner. Emily and Sven both took their borrowed alien grenades and threw it at the MEC’s legs, causing the MEC to fumble forwards, Mira gesturing frantically inside the cockpit trying to get control.

The suit lurched forwards before losing its footing, the entire thing falling forwards, crunching into a pillar and taking it down in a shower of rock and sparks. As the squads tentatively closed in, the cockpit cracked open with a hiss, failing to eject its pilot. From inside, Mira chanted loudly and angrily, bashing against the glass.

“No, no, no! This isn’t how its supposed to happen!”

Desmond approached the wreck, pulling a black revolver from his hip. “This ends here Mira. Last chance to walk away alive. More than your father gave to me when he destroyed my home.”

“I...I…” Mira looked down at her controls, letting out a heavy sigh. “I surrender...just get me out of here.”

Desmond holstered the weapon and held out his palm, a small Pulsar manifesting and Desmond ran it along the canopy. It drilled through the metal with ease and he gripped the metal hard as he finished drilling and ripped it open with little effort, grabbing Mira’s collar and pulling her out.

Mira stumbled to her feet next to Desmond, holding her hands up slightly in surrender around the large and united XCOM squad. She spoke softly for the first time. “So…prison…?”

“Whatever the Council deems to do with you,” Emily said, “probably prison, and probably somewhere unpleasant.”

Mira looked down, and then turned towards Emily. “Fuck that.” Her hand darted towards her shoulder holster, gripping onto her .50 caliber pistol.

Desmond was quicker than her, grabbing her wrist and slamming his knee into her gut, spinning her around and slamming her down to the ground, arm behind her back and the pistol in Desmond’s hand pressed against her head, the soldier resisting every instinct to put a bullet in her head. Mira sighed in defeat for the second time, Emily pulling out her own pistol. With a swift motion, she slammed her in the head with the handle, knocking her out cold.

“Thanks,” Emily nodded towards Desmond.

“No problem. Let’s bring the trash home.” Desmond stated harshly as he got off her and put a hand on his ear to tell Central of the success.

Emily walked towards the exit, taking a spiteful look back at the Black Void building, vaguely hearing Desmond talk to Central and Dallas talk to the Council Peacekeepers about cleaning up anyone left. She hoped this would be the last she heard of anyone trying to emulate EXALT.
