    X-COM Season 4 Role-Play Journals

Ryan Chen, Rookie. Personal Log, March 1st. Okay, so... zero dark thirty flight from the airport, over a dozen hours in the air, all very hush hush. Finally we get to this sweet underground base and... I'm a grunt? Holy shit. I spent almost a hundred thousand dollars of government money getting...

Ryan would be happy to chat with the good doctor. He might be able to procure German goods to help her feel more at home in exchange for the inside scoop from R&D...

Marines have Drill Instructors. The Army uses Drill Sergeants. Sorry, it's a point of pride/contention and I have seen a recruit make the mistake to a DI's face. It's not pretty (much like a recruit going for the ice cream machine in the chow hall). After Action Reports and combat critique are...

Well, there's obviously a black/gray market for alien body parts, so if people can smuggle him some bits on the side, Ryan might be able to get something more substantial than a handful of these nebulous "credits." You can't drink credits. You CAN drink Patron tequila, or Paddy Irish Whiskey...

I suspect wine is a bit too classy for most of us grunts. XD Mostly he'll be checking out the hard liquors and beers, but if someone has a special request for some kind of wine, he can probably get his hands on it eventually, assuming you've got something to trade for all that hard work and effort.

I'll start writing, but I'd like to have a conversation with a fellow or two. I PM'd Grelite, but Ryan's going to be hanging out in the bar area, surveying the stocks of alcohol and figuring out what he can bring in that's better, so anyone else who thinks they'd be in there and wanting to chat...

The Sectoid eyes are an important binding agent in the hooch! Ryan's not some amateur shipborne brewer hiding an illicit still in the back disused engine room. He's an importer. It's a legitimate occupation! Besides, the alien parts would be for selling, so he could get real stuff, anyways.

While soldiers certainly get into more than a few practical jokes and black humor, I don't want to play in a game of Hogan's Heroes, either. There is such a thing as military discipline, and baby mobiles and bibs as permanent fixtures are not conducive to good morale and discipline. Again, we're...

I think institutional hazing would be pretty unlikely. Most militaries already spend a lot of effort attempting to eliminate it. Well there's also this OOC thread for attempting to arrange conversations. I like the idea of a chat session, though I expect weekends to typically be busy for people.

Speaking from my own experience... it depends. Resources, construction costs, etc etc. The ant-farm view of the base shows a pretty well-developed facility, no hodge podge combat zone Forward Operation Base (FOB) here. Obviously, they've built for permanence. Funding plays a big part of it...

That would be pretty interesting. Very meta. It's funny you say that, there's actually a pretty neat twitter account (https://twitter.com/RealTimeWWII) that tweets as if World War II were going on right now (events 72 years ago on this day, the account is on 1942 now), including historical...

Also, he never misses an update. Ever. Daily strip for like 10 years now. A comic posted 365 days a year. That's impressive.

Oh sure, I fully expect the actual scientists and engineers to be top people with doctorates in their fields. Ryan just wasn't paying enough attention, he was shotgunning applications everywhere, desperately trying to find a job after graduation. The economy, you know. ;)

I'm considering Ryan's first journal to express bewilderment. He does have degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering, and thought he was applying for a cushy government job, where listing his military history was just to gain veteran's preference (pretending that the oath there...

Woo, bonus points for my guy being Canadian! XD Love that Odd mentioned that, since the guy is loosely based on me, thus I'm Canadian by birth as well (and now living in the US). Looking forward to seeing the battlefield, and hoping that I don't eat a bullet plasma blast on my first mission...

So many role players, only so many soldiers to play, sadly. Some of us have to watch... until the body bags start coming home, anyways.
