I had a thought: as the new assault coming in is the reward for this abduction mission, how is his/her background different than the usual hired for 5 credits recruits? Has he/she already been fighting the aliens with a different group and now will be joining with XCOM?

Sounds like an idea. Also, are we assuming that the soldiers are only doing what Commander Odd tells them to do (except for the instances where they panic) or are some actions going to be the character's own choice?

That was actually what I was aiming for. He encounters a FEW people who think poorly of his name, so he kind of expects EVERYONE to react that way to his name. I just didn't know how to express that without dropping completely out of character.
