audio Non-combat log 2:

"So I've been meaning to do another log again for a couple of days, and why not now?

Heh... thankfully smoking is still allowed. I couldn't take what I used to take here so smoking seems to have replaced it, And currently its working well somehow...heh even if it is swapping one sin for another as others might say. Also bureaucracy strikes again, some of the suits manged to get my personal belongings since i couldn't bring any of my stuff being arrested and all. However they brought some stupid stuff into the base, currently out side my room I have a large HIFI that the suits decided to bring instead of practical stuff like any of my guns, or a large chunk of my clothes. However clothes wise I have enough to live with and ill probably set up the Sound system in the bar where it will actually get some use.

The last couple of days have been interesting as a whole. just after I finished my last log I ended up meeting my bunk mates, they're an interesting bunch to say the least. The high up German officer that is Colin, Axton the merc, the sword fighting bible basher Aaron, the ex apple tech support employee Stevie, and Big Farmer, or at least that's what the giant calls himself. I honestly wonder how he doesn't break the bed back in the rooms. As combat experience goes, everyone apart from Stevie and me has had a combat experience or a military career. I admit they are nice to be around even if they can be naive and sickeningly optimistic, the only one who seems to a thinking somewhat realistically about the aliens is Aaron.

I've also managed to get round to watching the footage of the previous missions, there's not much to say on the whole other than despite the aliens not understanding the concept of explosives or body armour, and that Xcom loves to give troops weapons that leave fist sized holes in everything (I mean did you see that graveyard mission, was the objective to save Lt hardass and give every grave a piercing?),the aliens still manged to wound quite a few already as well one killing one. Apparently space paddy was his name, I don't really have anything to say about that apart from bad luck, sometimes you do everything right and a shot will still connect.

On that note there was somethings their that interested me, have you noticed how those 'sectiods' have their weapons strapped to their arms. It reminds me of a gun we were contracted to build for testing, There's a lot to say about the gun but all that's relevant was that the gun failed testing because of two major flaws. The first is that since its strapped to your arm, firing the dam thing would mean all the recoil of the gun travels down your arm instead of straight into your shoulder, so firing for an extended period of time isn't going to happen. Period.
Secondly the gun was as awkward as fuck trying to reload. Basically what i'm trying to say is that these aliens have gun that as far as I know has jack all recoil and Don't need to reload.we are screwed when it comes to equipment, and we're going to be completely fucked if the aliens ever discover the wonder of adding body armour or high explosives to to their checklist.

*cough*...ahem, well on a lighter note I've manged to see who else in on base. First one to mention is Lt hardass, or Zhang as i'm supposed to call him. For some reason he is sleeping in the rec room, not sure why but it fucks up my plans for midnight gaming.
Then there's that small, skittish Chinese girl, who I've heard is insanely good when it comes shit involving sword fights and the like, but is lacking when it comes to using guns. Name's Ayame apparently. I should really talk to her, after all we can learn from each other, well that's assuming she doesn't flee through the corridors in a towel like earlier today. There is also that girl from the combat log in the hospital so it might be worth seeing here as well.

John signing off for now. I'll suppose i'll start set up that HIFI and find something else to do, someone must have a card game or something set up somewhere, right?."

Audio Log [Translated from Mandarin]

I had an unsettling encounter while practicing my Jian-shu when some American challenged me to a sparring match. I did not want to, I was afraid of what would happen since I haven't had a sparring match in so long, but I am ashamed to admit, I let my pride control me again. There is a rumor going around that "the little Chinese girl doesn't know how to use a gun," and I couldn't let that happen with swords. I mean, I could, but again, I let my pride control me.

Just as I feared, I lost control. As I fought harder and harder, I just saw him standing there, smiling that arrogant smile that said he had no doubt I couldn't kill him, laughing as he said "I don't know why she complained, her body didn't say no." Thank goodness Anna was there to stop me; just because he was an American doesn't mean I wanted to hurt him.

Anna brought me back to our room, sitting me down on my bed, calmly telling me everything was okay. I just sat there, saying "I'm all alone now" over and over again. Anna gently grasped my head, and brought her face within an inch of mine. "Listen to me, Ayame," she said, looking me in the eyes, "As long as I'm here, you will never be alone. I'll always be there for you, in this world and the next." Seeing the sincerity in her eyes, I couldn't help but smile. As she wiped a tear from my eye, I gazed at her, somehow finding even more beautiful then I had before. I...I wanted so much to...just...reach...forward.....but, a hug...yes, that is all I need...

...for now...

After I had settled down, Anna tried to break the tension by telling me about somebody she met in at the shooting range. She said his name is Colin, and he helped her with her aim. She said he mentioned a wife and kid, and that it reminded her about how her father was home so infrequently when she was young, and she told him to make sure his child sees him as much as possible.

She then gave me a serious look, and said "Ayame, no."

"What?" I asked, looking away.

She sighed loudly, and said, "I know that look. He was just trying to help, and he said he was married."

"That doesn't mean he isn't going to try something." I said.

She pointed at me, and said, "Promise me you won't bother him, like that guy you tried to seduce a year ago, you know, because you wanted to see how loyal he was."

"He went for it, didn't he?" I asked.

"He was just chatting with me, and you beat the hell out of him!"

"He called you bitch!"

"So you had to left him unconscious in an alley with a broken nose?!"

"He had it coming!"

"Promise me you'll leave Colin alone. Promise me."

"Fine," I said with a huff, "I'll leave Colin alone, I promise."

...(sigh)...guess I went off on a tangent there. You know, Anna does so much for me, teaching me Russian, teaching me English, helping to keep my temper in check, and just being there when I need a shoulder to cry on. I wish I could do something for her. Maybe I could teach her martial arts. My only teacher literally beat my lessons into me, and I'm not going to do that, but I could at least teach her the basics, but how do I teach someone who is over 50 cm taller then me.....

...maybe...maybe if...I record myself, I can get an idea by watching myself. They said we can have personal cameras if we want one...yeah, I'll give it a try...

The extensiveness of the base I had thoroughly underestimated. The facilities made for the soldiers alone, not even including what is under construction, are extensive and include both gym and dojo, range and paintball course (seriously?), rec-room with pooltables and showers. The rest of the facilities for those of us who are to be put in the field are equally, if not more impressive.

The facilities dedicated to the study and research of the extra-terrestrials and their technology must be incredibly vast. This whole base functions like a small town, except it runs with military efficiency and everything anyone does is logged and processed. I cannot blame them for their care; hiring 'criminals' and mercenaries.

I'll be heading down to the dojo in the morning, see if I can practice my patterns and katas there. Perhaps there are others who still appreciate this art, I was used to having other people to practice beside, despite many of the current generation in the family who would rather just have guns and a car.

Maya,

I know it has been a while since we've talked, but I just thought I would see how you're doing. You probably don't want to hear from me, but I feel it's my duty to make sure you're doing alright. Not to mention I wanted an excuse to get my thoughts out to somebody.

This place is getting more and more unnerving every day. First a soldier comes back dead with half his body melted away, and then a squad brings back some Chinese Triad member carrying a briefcase filled with God knows what. Not to mention I saw a couple women came out of the Gym with the short one looking like she would stab anybody who came near her. I wanted to ask if they needed help,if there was anything I could do, but I stopped myself. Whatever problems they have, they're none of my business. I can't get too close to anybody here; they might be dead tomorrow.

Maybe I'll go to the range to see if I can't relieve some stress. Besides, I haven't had much practice with the weapons here, so putting a little time into testing them might not be a bad idea.

Anyways, send me a letter back, or not. Doesn't matter. I probably won't have the time to read much anyways.

Well I just saw the most amazing thing today,I just saw one of my room mates Aaron get pummeled buy Ayame in a sword sparing match, but that's not the fun part.the fun part was seeing Ayame getting serious. My god she was amazing the way her attacks were so fast and combining martial arts with swordsmanship was brilliant, and using her entire body as a weapon it was so beautiful to watch. She was just amazing I know most people are now scared of her now, but not me as a matter fact I wanted to shack her hand, and tell her that she is an honorable worrier and I can't wait to fight beside her side one day.

But I have a flight to catch so I wish her and Aaron well.

Well it seems that everyone is talking about what happened in the gym the other day. Well, it started with me and Aaron walking in on Ayame practicing on a dummy, so Aaron walked up to her and she was started, and it looked like she was about to take his head off. She asks why we were there, and I tell her that Aaron was looking for a sparing partner. So she warns us that she was not going to take it easy, we just went with it. The fight was intense at first, but then it went from ice to the hottest pepper in the world. I mean if you looked close enough, you could see a fire in Ayame's eyes. When it looks like she is about to kill him I run in between them and say "Stop, just calm down" I then lower my guard and get out from between them, she then swings and stops an inch from his neck. That is when I noticed tears running down her face, and then Anna ran in and went to escort or out, I stop them and say "Wait, are you ok." Anna replies "whats it to you" or something like that and I say "I don't think a man should ever just sit there when a girl cries, I... I wont stand there again." She then walks off and tells me to leave them alone.

It seams like it was yesterday when me and my wife got in our last fight 3 years ago. I had a bad day at work, before I worked for apple, and I got fire that day, we were arguing about getting out of that drug heap for our children, and I snap, I yelled at her and she packed her stuff and went to her mothers crying out the door, I just sat there. I never saw her again, but a few minutes sitting there I had realized what had happened and busted out in tears myself. I have regretted everyday since.

I saw Anna and Ayame heading to the cafeteria and started to run up to them, Aaron stopped me and said "Give it time", I knew I should wait even before Aaron grabbed me, I just wanted to say sorry.

I've finally have time to make a journal I've journal somethings had happen I have a job around the base to prevent boredom to extreme my job is to do maintence on the VTOL they have the pilot was very stingy about new people working on the thing he said something similar to " if you harm my bird I will KILL you " so I make sure I dont harm his bird also a while back when I took a shower with others and a woman ran out of the showers scared I think she was afraid we would rape her but I'm sure that the men here wouldn't do that to women. But I guess I could talk to the woman and organize a shower schedule so people won't feel uncomfortable when taking a shower also the same girl that ran out the shower also fought in a sword fight with Aaron it was but damm she must practice sword fighting all her life because she was badass I complimented her on her fighting skills and I hope she didn't think I was hitting her or being terribly awkward because it has been a while since I taked to a lady casual which reminds me I should talk to some of the guys here because it is getting kinda lonely.

Log Update, Personal Recorder

*English*
*Mandarin*

(Ayame's face appears on screen as she walks down the hallways)

[AK] These cameras are pretty advanced. I believe they are the same as the ones I used during that job in the Bailiwick of Jersey. Could have used English there, too...or French...At any rate, the picture quality is excellent, and I love the reverse video. Get to see my pretty face...wow, that sounded vain, and now I get to see myself blush...

(Arriving at the gym, Ayame switches the camera to its normal view. A dozen men are seen in sweats, sitting on a large mat on the left side of the room, listening intently to a soldier standing in the middle of them. Ayame walks over to the right corner of the room, setting up a small mat and positioning the camera to point at it. She struggles to drag over a wooden mu ren zhuang with spinning arms. She bows to her camera, then blushes, likely realizing she is technically bowing to herself, and begins her workout)

...of course, I'm sure most of you are thinking "why learn to fight? We're only going to be shooting at the aliens, what use can we have for physical fighting?" Well, that's an easy question to answer...

(Ayame moves in slow, methodical motions, slowly breathing in, slowly breathing out. Her face is the picture of calmness, her eyes closed. Slowly breathing in, slowly breathing out. She moves into a variety of martial arts poses, and makes slow punches and kicks, as though fighting underwater. Slowly breathing in, slowly breathing out)

...stamina, not to mention durability, but just because you probably won't get into a physical fight doesn't eliminate it's possibility. Now, you, come here. Don't worry, I won't hurt you. Too much...

(Seemingly satisfied, Ayame turns her attention to the dummy, starting with slow punches and kicks with the dummy locked. She starts moving faster and faster, her attacks rapid and precise. The sound of something heavy hitting the ground is heard, as well as a loud "oof!")

...looks like it hurt! Its okay, you can try again later. As you can see, a physical altercation, unlike in cheap Asian Kung-Fu movies, can often last only mere moments. How 'bout you, let me show you a good submission move...

(Ayame unlocks the dummy, and goes all out, striking the arms faster and faster, and causing the arms to spin faster and faster. She quickly strikes each arm, and soon they are all moving in flurry, Ayame rapidly dodging and blocking them. Her eyes can be seen moving rapidly, but her face retains it's calm demeanor. The sound of something heavy hitting the ground is heard again, as well as a loud yelp)

...feeling will come back in a few seconds. (Chuckle) Now, this is all well and good against human-sized foes, but as we've seen already, some of our foes are a bit on the short side. Obviously, nothing that small is going to be trouble strength-wise, but they can be trouble if you don't know how to handle.....hey! Hey you, girl!

[AK] Just ignore him, maybe he'll just leave you alone if you ignore him.

Hey, you, the short one, you're about the right size. Come on, be a team player! No one likes a stick in the mud!

(Ayame lets out a loud sigh and begrudgingly walks over to the crowd, grabbing her camera and placing it on a nearby bench. It faces where the soldier stands for the most part)

Wow, I was wrong, I think you're a whole foot taller then the sectoids (He pats Ayame on the head, Ayame growls loudly, her right eye twitching slightly) Now, as you can see, there is quite a size difference between us. (Chuckle) Too bad we don't have a costume for you to wear. (Ayame lets out an even louder growl) Now, just like in a gunfight, the best situation is a flank. As you can see (he grabs onto Ayame's shoulders), once you have a hold on them, they don't have many options with your superior strength and size.

(Without a word, Ayame grabs one of the soldier's arms, and flips him over her back, sending him flying several feet. He sits up and stares at her in surprise for several moments)

[AK] Unless foe uses greater size against you...bái chī guǐlǎo.

(The soldier quickly stands up and dusts himself off) Yes, well, very impressive, and, um, it...it shows the importance of catching the enemy off guard. But what happens when you face them head-on. Now, she's going to attack me head on, and I'll show you how to deal with such a small enemy, who has to compensate for their size by...

(Again without a word, Ayame runs forward. She lets out a high-kick towards his face, which the soldier blocks. She suddenly wraps her leg around his arm, Before he can react, she lifts herself up and pulls his arm back, wrapping her other leg around his neck. She pulls back, and the soldier lets out a yelp, dropping to his knees)

[AK] What I sure gǒuzǎizi here trying to say is "smaller" foe still dangerous, can be really fast and hard to hit. And, as you see (yanks slightly, resulting in another loud yelp) small foes often underestimated. You agree?

Y-yes. C-c-can you l-let me go n-now? (Ayame releases him. The soldier stands up, then falls onto a knee, holding his shoulder in pain. Ayame walks up to him and lefts his arm up, pokes his shoulder in two spots, then pulls on his arm, resulting in a loud "Pop!" The soldier stands up and rolls his shoulder, apparently free of pain. Ayame bows slightly, trying to hide a smile, and the soldier returns the bow) Well, I think we should call it a day. Thanks for your help, ki....uh, ma'am.

(Ayame walks over to her camera, and a slight smirk is seen on her face as she turns the camera off)

It's funny we are in the 21st century and people still focuse on sword training. I mean I see why you practice hand to hand but lets be real if I got in a fight with some one and they are 2 inc away from pulling a sword I will just shoot theam. And whear dose some one even get close enuf to use one besides thear clumsy.
Not like my fist I always practice in the ways of old Irish fisty cuffs and well I challenge eney lad with a sword to challenge me and I will show why we all stop use swords and started useing guns of fist it's the challengers choice.

I have had my fill with swords for a tad im just gunna keep my blade under the bed for the moment maybe get back to him next week. Id like to get my some boxing done i havent boxed in 3 months. So I could not sleep tonight. I don't know what it was, I just could not fall asleep.

I went out to the Skyranger. She looked lovely as always. As I walked in I could feel something was off... Something was not as it used to be.
I looked all over the crew compartments, but I saw northing, northing at all.
As I looked in the cockpit i found the disturbance... Dr. Shawn did infact put in the mugholder I have asked him 'bout.
Nice one.

I kissed Skyranger goodnight and took a walk in the base. As I came around the gym I heard someone yell. I stuck my head inside and saw one of the Rookies just... Yell? Is he going mental already? I don't think I have taken him out on the field.. Yet.
I desided it would jsut be better to leave him to his... Yelling.

As I returned to my bunk i piked up my chest board and went for the cantina.
Another all nighter then *sigh*

BEGIN RECORDING

[John is seen sitting alone at a table in the cafeteria, looking uneasy, he is obviously off-put by the large number of people in the room, nothing occurs for several minutes, until two women, one Russian, and the other Asian, sit at the other end of the table, seemingly more out a lack of anywhere else than any desire to converse with John. John nervously glances at them, before going back to not enjoying his meal in silence. The two women begin the converse in a strange mixture of Russian and English, seemingly meant for teaching purposes, as many of the phrases of Russian are repeated in English. This continues for around six minutes before John takes a deep breath, and steeling himself slides closer to the pair.]

[Looking between the two, he turns to the Asian, looks her over for a second, and gives her a traditional Chinese greeting. Looking shocked, she hesitantly returns it, before he turns to the Russian, and greets her in her native langue as well]

He reverts back to English, "I-I'm John. um.. John Eddings. It's a, it's a pleasure to mak... um it's nice to.. um.. meet you..."

"Anna, and she's Ayame, you're American, right?

"H-Hopefully you will not hold that... ....against me" He chuckles nervously

Anna smirks slightly "Where did you learn Russian?"

John shrugs, looking slightly self-conscious "I was bored, I umm.... w-well, I thought having a different alphabet might make nice challenge, um... the same with Mandarin.

[John face is hopeful at the possibility that he might not screw this up , However the hope falls as he turns to talk to Ayame, who is glaring at him suspiciously. His confidence shatters, and he winces]

He hastily picks up his tray "Umm... s-sorry for any....any inc-c-convenience, I-I'll just g-g-go now.... Um... Bye."

[He gets up quickly and in his haste forgets to pick up the camera. Ayame looks slightly guilty. Eventually the two go back to talking, and the low battery sign appears. After awhile the two finish eating and leave the frame, the camera is picked up, but dies almost instantly]

"Another one right in the head"
I'm taking a small break from shooting so I can write another Journal, plus I'm really tired, spend almost the entire day here. Most of my friends here are using the gym for sword fighting, I wonder how that will help us battle the most advanced race human kind has ever meet... But I dont really mind, whatever makes them happy, I dont judge others to often. Heck maybe I can even get back to my old hobby, Archery, if they have those in the gym. Would do a nice change of having a sniper rifel in my hand. Not that I mind, I like the rifel, I do hope I get to use it in battle. But just incase the Commander decides another weapon would be better for me, I started training with the other availabe weapons. Anyway I made a new friend today, her name is Anna Stone, got to say her aiming is not the best, but she isnt the worst either. I helped her today with the aiming, and I belive if she keep it up she will be hitting targets better than me. But something she is better at than me is building guns, never was the kind do build stuff, only invent it. But back to topic, Anna is a really nice girl, even though she is older than my daughter she reminds me of her, shy and smart. We talked about our family, her father wasnt there for her often, makes me think, do I want the same? She even suggested to me that I should ask the Commander for shore leave to see my family. It's a good idea, but I can't do that, it would only hurt me more to leave them again, but I thank Anna for listening to me and also being a open to me, I noticed that not everybody has her trust. I hope I do, even if it was a short conversation. My other friends Aaron and Stevie also seem to have meet them. Dont know the full story yet, but I quess I could ask for detail later tonight. Which reminds me I havnt eaten anything yet, maybe someone is in the cafeterria that I can eat lunch with. Alright I quess this is it for today, Guten Tag ;)

Let me just go out and say this: I am incompetent at speaking with anyone who isn't Irish. I sometimes fall back into Gaelic speech patterns because I grew up in the Ghaeltacht Tír Chonaill. I cannot hold a proper conversation with a foreigner for more than a cuig minutes without freaking out. So when I found that Rookie Aaron Bryant was part Irish, I jumped for joy. We have struck a deal: I will teach him as much Irish as I can, and he will teach me, a huge fan of Irish music, some English songs (I am slightly ashamed that I only know "Jimmy's Winning Matches"). Hopefully this works out. Slán.

From the Personal Recording Device of -John Eddings-

(Recording begins with camera pointing at the floor, a pair of small feet occasionally coming into frame as the holder walks through the hallway. The camera stops in front of a door. A knock is heard, and the door opens a moment later)

Yeah, what...oh, uh...can I help you?

[AK] You know where John, uh....Eddings is?

Eddings...Eddings, Eddings....the quiet guy? I think he's around the corner to the right, second door on the.....left?

[AK] Xièxiè.

(Camera continues moving through the hallway, turning a corner, then stopping at another door. A knock is heard, and there is no answer. A slightly louder knock is heard, and a few moments later, the door slowly opens)

[JE] H-hello? Oh! Um...A-Ayame, right? Oh! Is that my camera?

[AK] Yes. you left in canteen...in, in mess hall. I thought I bring it back.

[JE] Wow, thanks! I was looking everywhere for it! (Camera is lifted into air, and moves back and forth as it is looked over) Hey, you even charged it for me! Awesome! (Camera is pointed at Ayame. She folds her arms and gives a dirty look. The camera points at the ground again) S-sorry, I'm so sorry, its...i-its kind of a f-force of habit. Do you w-w-w-want to c-come in?

[AK] NO! I...I mean, no...thank you.

[JE] O-Okay, I'm sorry. S-sorry to bother you, I-I...

[AK] What wrong with you?

[JE] W-what do you mean?

[AK] You said you American, so you know English, right? Why you struggle to talk? You scared of Ayame?

[JE] N-no, I...

[AK] You scared of girls, maybe?

[JE] I...I just h-have social...phobias...I-its embarrassing, I know.

[AK] It...kind of pleasant...I mean...uh, re-refreshing.

[JE] W-what do you mean?

[Ak] Most men look at me, see little girl, think they better because I small, because I woman. Americans usually worst. You are different. I...I tired of being one who is afraid...

[JE] What do you h-have to be afraid of?

[AK] I...I...(Sob, Sniff) Wǒ yào líkāi. Duìbùqǐ.

March Seventeenth, Two Thousand and Fifteen
Dear Onkel,

I suppose to counteract the last week’s rapid pace, the last pair of days have been rather slow. The aliens seem to take their time with their attacks. It is quite different from what I would have proposed had I been leading the invading forces. They seem to be fond of the idea of surgical strikes at major population centers with small and maneuverable strike teams, to cause panic and reduce morale, as well as damage industrial centers. In fact, this can be seen from their very choice of technology and troops, favoring pure infantry tactics and the speed of their craft. The Insektoiden and Dünne Männer also seem to favor these forms of tactics, with the former being very light, fragile infantry, with very alien-portable weapons, and the latter seeming to be a pure infiltration unit, equipped with ‘natural’ defenses that seem to be intended to be used when their normal fare of weapons are inaccessible. Of course, the Schmetterlingspuppe may seem to counteract these ideas, with their extreme durability, rabid personality, and melee attacks, but in reality the opposite is true. The move extremely fast, capable of closing immense distances in the blink of an eye, as well as relatively immune to being restricted changes in terrain with their quadruped body-structure. In fact, hypothetically, they could climb and walk along walls and ceilings, provided the material were dense enough to support their weight. The Schmetterlingspuppe seem to act as berserkers of some form, with the purpose of causing enough havoc among the enemy to give the proper troops time to entrench and rout their foes.

Perhaps, after this war is finished, I should write a book on the tactics displayed by the alien invaders, and how we can incorporate the beneficial aspects into Bundeswehr doctrine. Such tactics could be useful, considering the steady downsizing we seem to be undergoing, due to the fear of war and nationalism our people have contracted. And now I see why I have been confused for a National Socialist. With the stereotypical Aryan appearance, the eye scar, and the omni-present military uniform, combined with this sort of personality, it is a wonder that I haven’t been stabbed by any members of the victimized groups. I suppose I owe that Russian girl an apology, for calling her a communist, among other terms, when she reacted harshly to my, admittedly much worse, tactics of attempting to get her to speak of her loyalties to a system of government. Must be out of practice on subtle interrogations, haven’t had such an incident since the brawl that gave me the scar I mentioned. I would say using the mess of the language that is English was the reason, but I do know enough to get such points across, like that one encounter with an Englishman who worked with the UN Peacekeeping forces. Can’t remember his name, but I do know it had German roots.

Well, it appears my time for rambling has come to an end, I should head down to the range again, use some real weapons, unlike those paintguns some recruits were toying with.

May we meet again as I pass the veil,
Leon

Extraterrestrial Analysis Log #1 [Translated from Mandarin]

Between working at the shooting range, exercising, training with my martial arts and sword fighting, practicing my English with Anna, thinking about how I could propose teaching Anna some martial arts, amongst other things, and doing all those miscelanious things like eating, sleeping, and.....(groan) bathing, I'm surprised how much free time I still have. I decided that the best way to go about using this time efficiently is to watch the footage from our battles and analyze the actions of the aliens. Perhaps I can find something helpful, something that will save a life or two.

To begin with, I look at our first foes, what have come to be known as Sectoids. Standing at mere 120 cm and weighing...probably about 45 kg or so, they look fairly unintimidating once you get past the initial shock of them, you know BEING ALIENS! However, I of all people know the danger of underestimating someone based on appearance, and indeed, they have proved a formidable foe. With the discovery of new types of aliens, considering how dangerous the sectoids are, and how even more dangerous the new types of aliens are, I shudder to think about how deadly any other aliens might be.

The sectoids are fairly quick and very smart. They're intelligence seems to be up to par with humans, using weapons, taking cover, and using flanking moves. The use of cover and the way they will often pull back when discovered shows a clear sign of self-preservation, which stands in opposition to the actions of the sectoid that delivered to us our first fatality. Refusing to simply assume it was just the sectiod that, as the American's put it, "rides the short bus", I am left with the conclusion that, while the sectoids aren't suicidal, that won't stop them from taking a likely kill, even at the cost of their lives.

Thus, Commander Odd would do well to never assume that a sectoid won't take advantage of a drop in defense, even if it would surely be killed as a result. Such loyalty to their cause is frightening, willing to die for the mere chance of slightly moving their side forward. Either that, or they are being controlled by some frightening force that likely sees them as mere pawns, and treats them accordingly.

One important thing to note is an unusual ability the sectoids seem to have. The way they are able to communicate with each other despite lacking a mouth clearly indicates telepathic abilities, and it appear that they have further psychokinetic abilities. The battle footage displays an eerie light, barely visible on the footage but confirmed by the soldiers, flowing from one of the sectoids to another. After this happened, the sectoid on the receiving end seemed to get an incredible boost in speed, accuracy, and durability. Naturally, this would lead one to believe that this is the sectoid that should be dealt with first, but I have observed something that implies otherwise. In a shoot out with two sectoids, with one boosting the other, I witnessed both falling in short order. Something seemed off, and I believe I know what it was. From what I could tell, the powered up sectoid was never hit, simply dying on its own when the other sectoid did. Noticing an unusual fluctuation in that eerie wave, and this leads me to an interesting hypothesis. I believe that this wave is indeed a type of "mind merge", and the shock of...well, dying, was transfered threw this merge and, in a word, "fried" the other sectoids mind. As such, the advantage this ability gives our foes has a major weakness ripe for taking advantage of.

Hmm.....thats all for now, I guess. I will likely give a look at those Tall aliens next...when I have time. For now, maybe a trip to the shooting range is in order. Perhaps I will be able to show the others that I know what I'm doing with a gun, despite rumors saying otherwise.

Well I'm hired now, I got an email sent to me from one of the members of this council who runs this whole secret operation that something had gotten screwed up in my paperwork and to make a long story short the council assumed Commander Odd was hiring my sister, but when they realized he was one recruit short they double checked for errors and finally realized he was tying to hire me instead. They told me they would be sending a regular chopper to pick me up at the airport around 0800 hours, no uniform required, they said they'd supply me with one once I got there. I know I should get to sleep but I can't, ever since I received the email my mind has been racing back and forth about it. Tomorrow... TOMORROW may very well be the last time I see this crummy old apartment ever again, it may very well be the last time I see my friends, my family, my hometown, everything I've come to know knowing I could be sacrificing my own life for this project. I'm scared but excited, whatever this X-COM project wants from me I know I'm going to be putting my talents to good use for the greater good! I just wish Rose could see this, and I hope I'm not TOO late for the party!
